The built-in wireless LAN is the capability to connect to a network via a wireless router or access point. Essentially WiFi is referred to as a public wireless network.
So yes they are kind of the same thing. WLAN is referred to as a private home/work network while WiFi refers to public accessible network!
In essence they are both wireless network types.

It would help if you gave us the context of where you saw that, but generally it would describe WiFi.

If you're asking if you have the capabilities of connecting to a Wi-Fi hotspot then I would say most likely yes. If you can connect to a WLAN then you can connect to Wi-Fi (assuming it's open to the public and/or you have credentials if required)
What is the reason you ask?
