Ok, here's a hint on mine:
It's something you ride. Wait, one of the clues already told you that didn't it. Ok, actually, it's more like you sit on it (it doesn't go anywhere).
Good luck.

Space occured to me, except that doesn't fit the present & past tense thing, even if it's also a verb.
Glad to see you are giving it a go.. . even if it isn't about numbers.
No, it is not space.

Nothing I was trying, mathematically, was working. Then last night my daughter was counting out her dolls in a way that had not occured to me.
Is the next number:
1113213211?
Yes, you got it! Makes me wonder what your daughter was doing. :)

Of course I'm giving it a go. ;) I do like math stuff, but I like puzzles of all sorts. I'm actually usually pretty good at this time (the "what am I?" sort of thing), but this one has me stumped.

A hint for the sequence. Read it aloud ;)
I read it out loud. Both just reading the numbers in the sequence (one, two, one, one) and read the number properly (one thousand two hundred eleven), and that means nothing to me. I don't get the answer. I'm telling you, I'm terrible at sequences, unless they're pretty easy.

Hmm, curious. I'd been thinking about a teeter-totter. Except that still doesn't cover the tense thing. And a teeter-totter needs more than just "me" and you - it needs another person.
But it's another line of thinking anyway cause I've been concentrating on stuff like air - got to learn to think of other types of stuff. I think I've also been taking "sky" a little to literally, like all the way to the sky, instead of towards it.

Hey, I just thought of something. Anyone here into those lateral thinking puzzles? For instance, you get a scenario that's pretty vague. You get just a little information that tells you about nothing at all. And then everyone asks yes or no questions. The answers are yes, no, and irrelevant. They're very difficult cause you get so little info that it's like finding a needle in a haystack, until maybe you start getting a little more information from the questions. Really, they need several people working on them to get different angles and different sorts of questions. I find they're about impossible with only one person.
Just for example, there's one about a guy at a circus, who was found dead, and something about a pole and something under his cot in his tent, and you have to guess what killed the guy. Don't remember the details (I could find out), but just an example of how little info you get.
If anyone's game, I've already got a couple. (Though I'd prefer starting a new thread just for that.)

Shoo!! Lol, I realised the 'see-saw ' just after morgaine mentioned teeter-totter. Don't know what it means, but it made me think of see-saw. Gah! Have I thought about this earlier...
Well played Calif :)
Morgaine, still nothing of the sequence?
morgaine300
Aug 3, 2010, 02:19 AM
No, I'm still lost on the sequence. You know I'm not exactly stupid at math, but just don't get that one. (Maybe the problem is that I'm being too math logical?)
And really, I think it's only fair that I get part credit for the see-saw. I thought it up! :p
OK, I will do the lateral thinking puzzle, the one I can remember off the top of my head. (If everyone likes it, I'll call my brother about the other one I can't remember.) I hope I'm calling that by the right name or it won't be what you think it is. And I will try very, very hard to check in a few times a day, something I normally don't do.

Actually, I just googled it. This is indeed a lateral thinking puzzle, exactly like I described. And the one I'm going to do first is actually there. (So no cheating and googling it! ) The solution is a bit different, but the solution is not an exact science anyway. It was interesting seeing a different flair on the solution though.

Hi Morgaine, I'm not sure where you live but it's 2:22 am here - why am I up? :( Anyway, the sequence might not be "math" so much and that's probably why you are stuck. It's more of a pattern. Aug 3, 2010, 08:39 PM
It can't be any number between 1 and 9 as that would make two of the statements correct - at least 1 and less than 10.
It can't be any number 10 or greater as that makes two statements correct - at least 1 and 10 or more.
With zero the only correct statement is less than 10.

One fish was eaten?

Or... one father and his two sons bring home 3 fishes, and the other father's sons didn't come, so he went to his home with only one fish?

JL, anything that is pure logic, with a definitive answer, and doesn't require any "weird" thinking, I will probably be able to solve. (As long as it's not so long and complicated that I decide I don't care anymore.) I posted one in the other thread:
https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/games/ive-got-another-riddle-you-493534-6.html
Which is logical, but it requires a bit of interpretation with it as well. I didn't get it (I found a solution, but not the correct one) until some other people started "thinking out loud" and then I finally picked up on the interpretation part. Then I could solve it.
Anyway, came up with the same answer as Unky. I'll leave it for a bit if someone else wants to try.

You´ve got 2 glasses of wine. One with red wine, the other one with white wine.
Now you take a spoonful of the white and put it into the red glass, stir this, and then you take a spoonful from this stirred one and put it back into the white.
Is there more white wine in the red glass than red wine is in the white glass or is it the other way around, or is it equal?

There is more white in the white.
If 5 mL of white was moved to the red, it was undiluted.
If 5mL of the red with white was moved over to the red, it wasn't 5mL of red.. it was mostly red, but a little white back.
More white is in the white.

Oops. Crap. wrong.
What worked in my head is wrong on paper.
First... you must assume that both transfers are equal in volume... that exactly the same volume was moved in both cases.
Then...
Lets pretend we have 100 mL of each wine in two glasses.
You take out 5 mL of white to the red. That's 105 mLs of wine in the "red" glass, 100 mL red with 5 mL white. Its 95.238% red.
Then you take 5 mL of this mixture to the white.
You add to 95 mL white 4.762 red and 0.228 mL white... for a total of 100 mL wine, but the composition is different... its just 95.228% white...
The reason is you are adding a mostly red aliquot to a lesser volume of white. The lesser volume of white is what got me mentally.
Pooh.
Shouldve done the math first.

Okay, either it is too late and my one glass of wine did me in (not unusual), or you have a slight math error.
I worked it out as follows:
You start with 100 ml of white and 100 ml of red.
5 ml of white is moved to the red, so you now have 95 ml of white, and 100 ml of red with 5 ml of white added.
If you take 5 mil of this mix, 4.762 ml (=100/105*5) will be red and .238 (=5/105*5) ml will be white. This gets added to the 95 ml of white.
The original white is now (95 ml+ .238 ml) 95.238 ml white and 4.762 ml red.
The red mixture is now (100 ml-4.762 ml) 95.238 ml red and (5 ml-.238ml) 4.762 ml white.
They are equal.
In looking at your numbers, when you add the 5 ml to the 95, the correct numbers should be 4.762 and .238. It looks like a math error – as 4.762+.228 does not equal the 5 ml you are transferring, or another way to look at it is 95+4.762+.228= 99.99, not 100.
Please tell me I haven't embarrassed myself. :o

I missed all the fun. For you math haters, the wine puzzle wasn't really meant to be a math puzzle. I figured it out just by sort of picturing it in my head. Now I grant you, I'm not sure that I could actually explain the "why" part that way, but I knew it was equal fairly quickly. My brother did it in his head the same way, without all the math. Now both our "instincts" wanted to get it wrong, but then we got it once we thought about it just a bit.
(And yes, evaporation and all that rot was just complicating the puzzle. It wasn't really a chemical experiment. Alty had the right idea of a better chemical experiment. :D)

Okay, either it is too late and my one glass of wine did me in (not unusual), or you have a slight math error.
soooo entirely possible after my maddening day... and I do
I'm going to approach this without looking at my last answers...
I worked it out as follows:
You start with 100 ml of white and 100 ml of red.
5 ml of white is moved to the red, so you now have 95 ml of white, and 100 ml of red with 5 ml of white added..
this means you now have a "red" with 95.238% red composition...
If you take 5 mil of this mix, 4.762 ml (=100/105*5) will be red and .238 (=5/105*5) ml will be white. This gets added to the 95 ml of white.
I didn't agree with this at first, but I think I have a sticky number pad key... my %s were completely off (a little) three out of four times... I agree with you here... 4.762 mL of the aliquot will be red...
The original white is now (95 ml+ .238 ml) 95.238 ml white and 4.762 ml red.
yep. 95.238 white. Agreed. One of two critical numbers agreed upon.
The red mixture is now (100 ml-4.762 ml) 95.238 ml red and (5 ml-.238ml) 4.762 ml white.
the red is now 95 mLs pure red with 5 mLs mixed mostly white aliquot added on, that being 4.762 white and 0.238 red... which means a total volume of 100 mL and it being 95.238 red...
which, is essentially tied.
I give up.
this can't be answered without the math. My sticky keypad and lack of attention missed this.
JL gets the prize.

Sorry morgaine... I was very very busy yesterday with homework. In simpler terms:
Say you take 5 'beads' from the white whine and put in the red wine glass and stir. The 5 white beads get distributed in the red wine. You take the same amount of beads, from the red mixture. You find that it is more likely that you end up with 4 red and 1 white beads. Result, you have 4 'foreign' beads in either glass.
(You cannot take 5 red beads because you ought to have at least some white [since all the white liquid is evenly distributed in the red wine], and the most likely between having 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 is obviously 1)

There was no color of the glasses.)
As for the charcoal/ember -- I think that is right. Um... sorry, but I realized after I posted it that I'd never seen the solution posted. (Everyone was posting a million riddles at once and many of them sort of got lost in the crowd.) But I always thought it was charcoal. OK, too easy.

Yes it is this, I figure you know why, so lets see if someone else can explain this?
Good job by the way.

Well, the whole thing is suspicious... only thing that I think remains are:
the assistant first said 'a' guest, then he said there was apartner.
the assistant had the time to take, hide, and look at what page he hid the paper in the presence of the gunman's partner.
Unky, go off NK's answer, you might be able to explain why he concluded this from hearing that?

I know what he means, but can't there be any book where the page count starts on the left? :o

I am not sure Unky. As far as I knew every book started with 1 on the right page.

I'm pretty sure all books do start with 1 on the right. I caught that one immediately, but every time I know one, someone else always beats me. (That's what happens when you work weird shifts and don't get on until late.)
Did anyone ever figure out the sack one?
And has anyone but J noticed the new lateral thinking puzzle? Or are we pooped out on those?

As the official b@stard to stir the pot that was calm...
We don't know the language in which the book was written... if it was hebrew or persian the first page would be on the right and read "in reverse" order... so... it is entirely possible to have thy document 'tween those page counts.
I'm a snot.

I've seen it. I'm just off the lateral thinking threads after my absolute mental flameout on the first one.

Yes, you are. ;) That just ruins the joke of it. Or I should say, there wouldn't be any way to solve it unless we made the assumption that it's not Hebrew or something. A real detective would need to check such things, but in a puzzle we just assume we don't need to check.

Well, just pour a little bourbon on the flame... oh wait, no, not good. Um, some baking soda then. Yes, but put some baking soda on the flame and all should be well.

I don't think I saw that... or was it something about an owner and a helper thing carrying a sack?
If that's it, then it was solved.

Well, all is fine by me and your added knowledge, but as said before I said this, since the answer to the riddle is that it could not be between those pages, it must be written in English so good try and you gave me a laugh anyway.

I think all the ones in the lateral thinking puzzle have been solved so there has been nobody there and since my riddle wasn't really one like that, I posted it here, but anyway I like the ones in the other thread so please post more.

No, it's a new thread that's been mostly ignored, like it just hit page 2. Unky said he just now found it. (No one was posting so it wouldn't be showing up in subscribed lists. Er, sorry, alerts list.)
I can post more on the other riddle thread, once I'm home and can get to them. I'm sure others have more.

I was not ignoring it just so you know. I keep checking it but there has been nothing new added so I therefore people don't go there and can't solve any riddles.
As for the one about the grain and the sacks. I believe it was Kit who said something about the farmer was carrying the grain and the helper carried two empty sacks. You then said, correct. I don't know if it was about that or not but I am sure it was assumed that way by others as well. If that is not the correct answer then, Sorry.

Yes, it's been difficult to follow new threads on the ffStyle, but now that v2 is back, it's much easier! :p

Really? I've never been in the ff for long. I got fed up with it rather quickly. Then I decided I better go check it out and make some notes if I wanted any say in the opinion area. But last time I tried it, it got stuck with a page with no headers -- I couldn't go to my profile or home or anything cause that was all missing off the top. I forget what I did have on the page but I was able to click on Ben and get to his profile and send him a PM to fix it. Otherwise I was totally stuck and couldn't do anything.
Now why would I want to try something like that again?
