I am wondering if I should have a camera scope done on my sewage line. I had the line unclogged yesterday. They had to go out 150 feet (last time was 7 years ago and it was 126 feet). The owner of the plumbing place suggested the camera scope. I have talked to several people since then and have been advised not to do it now. If something happens within a year, then it should be done. Is that good advice?

Well, it is always good to know what exactly causes the backups. Sewer video inspection will tell you just that. It will show you what exactly is causing the problem. No guessing here. Also, it will pin-point the exact location of the problem.

Video inspections used to be expensive. Not anymore. In most cases, you can have it done for few dollars - maybe even for free - as a part of the job.

I'm so not an expert in this area, so its just my two cent experience...

We had our line scoped (much shorter run than yours) a few years ago knowing it was probably 50 year old orangeburg and seeing two to three local yards a year dug up. The discovered standing sewage in the line 20 feet out wasn't causing a problem yet, but we bit the bullet, cancelled the summer vacation, and instead bought a shiny new line to the sewer.

Our neighbors had a long run, like yours, had a blockage, like yours, and played the same roulette game of "we'll see if its a problem over the next year"... and when it did become a problem in that next year it was standing sewage in the basement with snow on the way and holiday expenses about to pile up. Needless to say, they regretted not paying to go all the way to the street, regretted not budgeting for what they knew they'd have to do (they knew the line hadn't been replaced and the orangeburg would be looking pretty sad), and said outright they wouldve done it differently if they could go back.

Why do your neighbors say don't do it? Just think it's a waste of money?
