I will be installing a dropcieling in my basement , will be dropping it about 3 inches(hopefully this works)My question is when I do, the basement door is to tall. Is it common practice to cut the door lower or to build a swing area for into the configuration of the ceiling for door ,and leave the door at it 80 inch hight.
Thank You
Rob

There is no code to follow for this situation. If you do anything do not cut the door. Boxing a area that allows a door to swing is the only thing that makes any sense.

I agree with ballengerb1. Do not cut door.
Most ceiling grid recommend 4'' minimum to get tile in and out. 3'' to tight area to work tile.
Good luck

I found out I will only need to cut 2 inches off max, off the top of the door,Do you still recommend to just box it in, either way wouldn't be a problem, Just that I think the ceiling would have a smoother flow all being the same.
Thanks again

3" or 1/2", do not cut the door. How would you deal with the top of the door frame?

agree with ballenger too, you can use 1x2 fur stripping and rock out for the swing area.. your drop should be minimum 4 " and or you may consider lowest points of pipes etc.
