How did your benchmark test go?
Thanks!
Shiang
Apr 11, 2009, 06:49 AM
The benchmark was all right haha. It wasn't difficult but, it wasn't really fun. :)
Clough
Apr 15, 2009, 01:03 AM
I'm sorry that I haven't been around here for awhile Shiang! Will be on more now, though.
Shiang
Apr 15, 2009, 01:30 AM
That's all right.
I'll be online more as well because I am on spring break. :)
Clough
Apr 15, 2009, 01:31 AM
You're on here awfully late!
Shiang
Apr 15, 2009, 01:33 AM
Yup
I'm about to get to sleep though, so have a goodnight :)
Clough
Apr 15, 2009, 01:38 AM
Yeah, I need to get to bed soon also. Have you spent some time studying the things on those music websites where I posted the links?
Clough
Apr 15, 2009, 01:59 AM
Okay, I can see that you're now logged off from here.
I wish for you a goodnight also! :)
Shiang
Apr 16, 2009, 07:09 PM
I'm online right now and will for a few hours. :)
Clough
Apr 16, 2009, 10:01 PM
I just got online here now, Shiang. I'm sorry that I missed you earlier tonight!
I asked you a question in post #257 above...
Shiang
Apr 16, 2009, 10:10 PM
Oh sorry. I overlooked it on accident. But I haven't really this week, instead I was working on a class project.
Clough
Apr 16, 2009, 10:51 PM
Please do study the things on those websites. It will enable us to move along faster here and I'm sure that you will be able to play your song and other pieces of music because of the knowledge that you'll have gained.
I know that your schoolwork comes first. That's really important!
Thanks!
Shiang
Apr 18, 2009, 07:07 AM
Of course school first. :)
Okay, I made some print outs so I can take with me to study today.
Clough
Apr 18, 2009, 03:17 PM
Okay, that's cool! I'll look forward to working with you at some point in the near future then!
Thanks! :)
Shiang
Apr 21, 2009, 08:59 PM
Haha hopefully really soon. :)
I have a question though, I haven't found a section about those funky looking notes. What are those ones that look like several notes stacked on top of each other?
Bree-Anna
Apr 21, 2009, 09:38 PM
Hello?
Clough
Apr 25, 2009, 05:01 PM
Hi again, Shiang!
I haven't forgotten about you! I've just been really busy. I'm not sure what you're asking about here? Do you mean the notes on the Grand Staff or just notes by themselves?
Thanks!
Clough
Apr 25, 2009, 05:05 PM
Hi, Bree-Anna!
Did you start your own thread about writing a song? I would be glad to help you!
Thanks!
Clough
Apr 28, 2009, 11:07 PM
Did I lose you, Shiang?
Shiang
Apr 28, 2009, 11:14 PM
No I've been super busy lately. There is the state testing and plenty of projects to come with them. :(
I meant these crazy notes here. :)

Well hello, Shiang!
Those are chords. You would play them with your left hand.

Shiang
Apr 28, 2009, 11:24 PM
Hello Clough.
Ohh so that's what they're called. Thank you. :)
Clough
Apr 28, 2009, 11:28 PM
See? You learned something else! I just a couple of new students close to where I live. One of them plays the piano and the other one plays the violin. There father has 18 children! 12 of them are still at home with him.
How is it that you were able to just save, as an image, a portion of the music that I wrote for you, please?
Thanks!
Shiang
Apr 28, 2009, 11:31 PM
Yep! Wow that's very many children to take care of. I even find it hard enough taking care of only three of my sisters!
Oh um I used photoshop to cut off a piece of the image, since the computer I'm using doesn't have paint or anything else to do it.
Clough
Apr 28, 2009, 11:33 PM
I don't have Photoshop, but several other free programs that I like to use. I'm going to see if I can do that same thing with at least one of them.
How is your dancing coming along?
Thanks!
Shiang
Apr 28, 2009, 11:38 PM
I like photoshop for all the file save options it gives me as well as it's resizing feature. What programs do you use?
Dancing is all right, nothing new. There's a lot of sitting around lately since we're staging all the dances for our performance in May.
Clough
Apr 28, 2009, 11:43 PM
The two photo editing software that I like to use the most are Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/) and Pixia (http://www.ne.jp/asahi/mighty/knight/).
Those two names above, are links to the sites for them.
If you're staging the dances, why is there a lot of sitting around? Might it be because of waiting for others to be choreographed and staged while you have to wait for your part to come?
Shiang
Apr 28, 2009, 11:48 PM
Pixia looks like a good program for something free. :) I'd use Opencanvas, but it's not mac supported.
Well, sitting and standing around. One because we have to be placed around, run it a few times, stand some more while it's being adjusted. And yes while waiting for my part to come while others are being staged.
Clough
Apr 28, 2009, 11:51 PM
That's what I figured concerning the dancing... I've been in over 40 musical theater productions, either on the stage as an actor or in the pit orchestra.
Is Opencanvas free?
Shiang
Apr 28, 2009, 11:54 PM
Woow that's a lot! I didn't know you did acting?
Version 1 I think, is free now. The rest if the um retired? Ones I'm not sure of yet.
Clough
Apr 29, 2009, 12:00 AM
Yes, I've been in a lot of different types of shows and music-making groups...
Have you studied some of material that we were going to work on?
Shiang
Apr 29, 2009, 12:03 AM
What are the shows you've been in like?
Yes, of course! :]
Clough
Apr 29, 2009, 12:09 AM
Okay! That's great that you've studied some of the material! That will help you to be able to play your song and understand what you're doing!
The shows that I've been in on stage or in the pit orchestra have been musicals, like Cats, Oklahoma, South Pacific, Funny Girl, Fiddler on the Roof, The Wizard of Oz, etc.
They've been professional, community, college and school theater productions.
Shiang
Apr 29, 2009, 12:14 AM
I have to make sure that it sticks with me haha. Is it okay if I practice playing those nursery songs?
Ohh I haven't heard of most of them on that list. But I do like musicals, they are very interesting.
Clough
Apr 29, 2009, 12:25 AM
I'm sure that it will stick with you because you are a person who tries really hard and we'll also work on those things here.
Yes, it's okay to practice the nursery songs!
What do you suppose the name of the chord is in the image below that I've circled? It's a Major chord and the name of it is what the letter name of the note on the bottom is.
19147
Shiang
Apr 29, 2009, 12:29 AM
Okay, though I don't want to like practice them, and then find out I've been doing it wrong the whole time haha.
Uhm that would be E, right?
Clough
Apr 29, 2009, 12:32 AM
If it was the treble clef, you would be correct. It would be an "E". But, the bass clef is different. Please use one of the charts that you have to figure it out.
Thanks!
Shiang
Apr 29, 2009, 12:34 AM
Oh! Would it be "G"?
Clough
Apr 29, 2009, 12:37 AM
Wow! You're awesome! That's correct! What do you think the middle note of the chord is, please? It's on the third line up.
Shiang
Apr 29, 2009, 12:40 AM
"E"? How do I tell which one it is, if it's upside down?
Clough
Apr 29, 2009, 12:44 AM
It matters where the head (small oval shape) on the note is located. If the stem (line on the side of the note) goes up or down doesn't matter as far as the letter name is concerned.
Clough
Apr 29, 2009, 12:46 AM
Do you remember this?
19148
Shiang
Apr 29, 2009, 12:59 AM
So the bottom of the three little circles is what matters?
Yes I remember that.
Clough
Apr 29, 2009, 01:03 AM
Yes, the bottom little circle is on the "G" line.
Since we had been talking about musicals, I thought that you might be interested in reading a review about on a couple of years ago where I played the string bass at our local dinner theater here.
Here is the link.
Theater review "Liebowitz Sisters" provides lovely change (http://www.qctimes.com/lifestyles/leisure/article_a919ae96-2215-5dde-aaf9-4fff6d033ff8.html)
Shiang
Apr 29, 2009, 01:18 AM
That review makes the Liebowitz Sisters sound so interesting. Is there a book on it that I could read?
Oo I have yet to see some dinner theaters here, few except in large/popular shopping areas.
Clough
Apr 29, 2009, 01:21 AM
I don't think there is a book on it that has been written. It's a musical where the audiences through the years have been smaller and smaller. It's a great show, but didn't seem to stand the test of time like so many other shows have. So, the run that I played was to be the last, sadly. Perhaps it will be revived again someday...
Remember my question as to what the middle note of the chord is?
Shiang
Apr 29, 2009, 01:27 AM
Oh but it sounds like such a good story. I think it could be revived, if more people knew about it. It seems like one of those things that get lost because not many people are talking about it.
The middle note of the chord is "B"?
Clough
Apr 29, 2009, 01:31 AM
In the treble clef, it would be a "B" and you would be correct. But, remember that the bass clef is different.
Yes, it is a good story for the show. I loved playing for it! Hopefully, it will be revived someday!
Shiang
Apr 29, 2009, 01:34 AM
I'm so confused right now. I don't think I understood the question. D:
Time to spread the word to friends haha. I want to see a show of that one day.
Clough
Apr 29, 2009, 01:36 AM
If the bottom note is "G", then you count up from "G" using the seven letters of the musical alphabet.
Hint: The next space up is "A".
Shiang
Apr 29, 2009, 01:38 AM
So what am I supposed to find? The middle of the circled chord or..
Clough
Apr 29, 2009, 01:44 AM
Yes, the letter name of the middle note of the circled chord in the bass clef. Please use your chart or the keyboard chart that I provided.
Thanks!
Shiang
Apr 29, 2009, 02:00 AM
Then, it is B isn't it?
Clough
Apr 29, 2009, 02:03 AM
You're 100% correct again! Way to go!
So, what's the letter name of the top note of the chord, please?
Clough
Apr 29, 2009, 02:24 AM
Okay, it looks like you fell asleep on me! It's getting pretty late anyway, and I'll bet that you have school today!
I wish for you sweet dreams and a pleasant sleep! :) We can continue at another time...
Thanks!
Shiang
Apr 29, 2009, 06:48 AM
Yay! c: Top note of the chord is "D"?
Sorry for falling asleep in the middle. :( I'll get back on after school today.
Thanks. Hope you had a good sleep also. :)
Clough
Apr 30, 2009, 02:17 AM
You're correct again, Shiang! The top note of the chord is "D"! I'm proud of you for the progress that you're making!
Shiang
May 1, 2009, 06:46 AM
Haha yay! I'm glad I'm making progress! :D
Clough
May 2, 2009, 05:16 PM
Yes, you are making progress Shiang! I'm sorry that I haven't been around! Am having some difficulties at my home right now and am living with friends. Am using their computer, so I don't have my usual resources now that I would normally have available to help people musically.
Again, I'm proud of you! I wish that you could hear my new piano and violin student who are both about the same age as you!
Shiang
May 3, 2009, 07:24 AM
That's all right, I haven't been around much either. Oh I see. I do hope the difficulties will be over soon. :)
Ohh that'd be really cool. Can they record like you did with the simple version? :0
Clough
May 9, 2009, 06:45 PM
Hi, Shiang!
Am still having difficulties here. Hopefully, they will be over soon! Have found the ways to get them to be over. Just need to be able to do the ways.
I'm working on different ways to that you can hear recordings of things here. It might be possible for you to hear what my private students sound like. I'll work on that.
It would also be neat if I could here what you might be playing as we progress here with helping you to learn how to play!
Thanks!
Shiang
May 18, 2009, 07:18 AM
Sorry I have been absent for a while.
That sounds good. Ohh that'd be so cool to hear them.
Haha I need to learn how to record as well then so you can hear my wretched playing. :)
Clough
May 22, 2009, 01:23 AM
Hi, Shiang!
What I would suggest doing is getting a microphone and attaching it to your computer and then we can go from there.
I'm sure that you're playing is going to be good! :)
Thanks!

May 23, 2009, 10:45 AM
wat a strang song lol but i like it
Clough
May 24, 2009, 09:40 PM
Hi, Shiang!
Are you by any chance around?
Thanks!
Shiang
May 29, 2009, 07:24 AM
Okie dokie! I've got me a mic. :]
Sorry for not being around. :(
Lilly: Thank you. :]
Clough
May 29, 2009, 02:19 PM
Hey, that's great, Shiang! Now, you can record yourself so that I can hear what you're playing! :)
Thanks!
Shiang
May 29, 2009, 03:25 PM
Oh I have to take it up with me huh? I'll try to then.
What would you like to hear me play lol?
Clough
May 29, 2009, 06:54 PM
I's like to hear you play any piece! I know that you'll be able to play your song that we've worked on. But, you'll need to practice it, and I need to give you instructions in how to practice.
The strange thing is for me, that I can't find my own microphone. It appears to be hiding somewhere. I know that I didn't take it anywhere outside of my home.
Shiang
May 29, 2009, 11:04 PM
Okay I'll like record soon as I can. May I have the instructions now?
Hrmm take a while off it and it will magically appear! I can't seem to find things when I look too hard lol.
Clough
May 30, 2009, 02:43 PM
Do you mean instructions for recording or instructions for playing your song on the keyboard?
Clough
Jun 7, 2009, 08:46 PM
How's it going, Shiang? Have you finished the school year yet?
Thanks!
Shiang
Jun 13, 2009, 01:50 AM
I had meant, instructions for play the song. :)
It's all right, school ends in two more days after the weekend! Then I'll have most of the summer free.
Clough
Jun 13, 2009, 03:48 PM
Okay, that's great! Then you'll be able to spend more time on this project!
Most of the schools around here are already out for the summer.
Thanks!
Shiang
Jul 15, 2009, 06:37 AM
Clough, could we end the project?
I seem to have lost the enthusiasm for it. :(

Hey Shiang, I've been working on a few songs too as well.
Every time I write it sounds good at the time, than the next day not as much.
So I start on another one and therefore I have bits of pieces everywhere.
You got to keep working on a song and if you don't like it later try to give it some touches and that way you ll finish a song and you ll have more enthusiasm in playing it.
Let me know if you need help working on it,

I write songs too.
Here is one
You might be thinking I'm a boring girl
You never knew the real me
You might be just like everybody else
I am going to show you the real me yeah
Why don't others think you know who you are
The real you is about to shine through
You don't know who I am
But you're about to find out!
This is me, and you can't ignore it
Going to tell you all about me
And I want to know, why you didn't ask before
I've been hiding out, all this time
And now I feel like something's right
Sha la la la sha la la la la
I've been all alone in the dark
I feel like a revolution is about to start
All the lonely people, we are going to rule
Yeah, with you and me we'll become cool
I am going to show you the real me yeah
Why don't others think you know who you are
The real you is about to shine through
You don't know who I am
But you're about to find out!
This is me, and you can't ignore it
Going to tell you all about me
And I want to know, why you didn't ask before
I've been hiding out, all this time
And now I feel like something's right
Sha la la la sha la la la la
Listen to you're heart, a beat that you can dance to
Just sing and dance along
Yeah, you'll connect with this song
All of us,
We're going to scream and shout,
Without a bit of doubt, telling everyone
Who we are!
The real you is shining through
Yeah you know who I am
Know it's time for me to find out about you
This is me, and you won't ignore it
And I want to know, why you didn't ask before
I've been hiding out, all this time
And now I feel like something's right
Sha la la la sha la la la la
I'm not INVISIBLE
You now know who I am
And this is who I want to be
The real you is shining through
Yeah I know who you are
And you just said
This is me, and you won't ignore it
And I want to know, why you didn't ask before
I've been hiding out, all this time
And now I feel like something's right
Something's right, something's right

Thanks!
