Is there a way to file bankruptcy without hiring an attorney? I checked into the fees and the filing fees are only $400 plus credit counseling $50. Attorneys want to charge $1500 and I don't have that kind of money. Is there something I can do without hiring an attorney?

You can file your own, and there are two credit counseling required, one right after you file, and the other after the first creditors hearing.

You can find fill in the blank forms on the internet.

But knowing the exemptions, knowing what to put on the forms and the such is the harder.

As FrChuck said - you can do this yourself but bankruptcy is one of those matters where everything must be 100% correct. Skip one creditor, put one creditor on the wrong line and some years from now you find your Bankruptcy set aside and yourself charged with fraud.
