I flew to Texas and picked up my grandchildren (at the time 3 years & the other one was 8 months old) on June 14, 2008. The father came and picked up the now 4-year-old on August 2, 2008 and left the infant with me. At no time, from June 15 - to August 2, 2008, did either one of the parents contact me and ask regarding the welfare of their children. I have had no support from them, no insurance card, and no interest of concern. The father believes he will drive here in 5 days from Ft. Worth, Texas (I am in southern Indiana) and take the infant from me even though he has not seen him in four months. This child has thrived with me - when I picked him up in Texas he was just a blob on the floor - he knew if he cried no one would pick him up. After Hurricane Ike came through I could not get a hold of my son, so I contacted the city police and they went to the home at 2:30 pm and my four-year-old grandson opened the door to the police - naked. The police had to go to the bedroom to wake up the father. According to the police, the house was a 'pig sty' with food on the floor and the police were quite disturbed by it, so the police contacted child protective services. I have no knowledge of the outcome. What are my rights in keeping my grandchildren?

Did you go to court to gain even temporary custody of them while you had them? If not you need to get a lawyer first thing in the morning and file for emergency custody using the records from the police to prove the child would be in danger. Though the fact that you let one go with out a fight won't help your case. The father is the father and has all the legal rights to his child unless you get into court ASAP.
