Try the Better Business Bureau, Untitled (http://www.bbb.org)

It can be tough, since many companies use similar names to other companies, and for many, they actually create pages that use key words to make them come in on searches for fraud, complaints and so on. That way if you are searching for bad things, you only end up on sites created by the actual compay you are searching for. Done a lot with MLM companies.

I do a bit of detective work... I Google for the company name and see what (if anything) has been written about it. I Google for their website domain name (www dot whatever dot com) and see what I can find. I use Whois (http://www.whois.net/) to find out who owns that domain name and how long they've owned it (if that information is hidden, that tells you something, too). If it's a different company, I Google THAT company and see what I can find about it. I add the word "complaint" to the names I've found and Google again; I do the same with the word "scam".

As Fr. Chuck says, a lot of scammers move from company to company so this can be a real chore. There are scam alert sites out there, but some of them are also run by scammers (they'll post negative comments about other MLM schemes then offer one as the "best"). Also you'll see negative threads on a company followed by very positive comments by someone... I've googled phrases from these positive comments and found the same phrase on other sites. Some scammers will hire someone to counter negative PR on consumer alert sites in this way.

One thing I've learned in life is: if it seems to be too good to be true... it is.
