I was recently served paperwork to appear in court for an old vehicle debt (2002). I gave the vehicle back that same year but to the 3rd party creditors are not satisfied. I have read some tips on this site regarding Intent to Defend and Debt Collection practices but, they are somewhat lengthy and a little confusing. I live in Iowa and could use some helpful advise. Thanks.

Giving the vehicle back does not relieve you of the responsibility of the debt. The sad fact of life is that a car depreciates hugely when you drive it off the lot. So its very likely that the car was auctioned off for less than the loan balance. You are then responsible for the difference.
If you are confused by any of the advice here for dealing with a summons, please feel free to ask specific questions. But if this is a valid debt, your best bet is to try to work out a settlement.

I did contact the collector and tried to settle-however they stated the amount was insufficient. I offered approximately 1/3 the total due. I do not have any $ and am currently unemployed.I am trying to file paperwork with the courts on my own.

Start with a notice of your Intent to Defend. Send a copy to the creditor with a request for debt verification.
