"Birds of a feather, flock together..."
That's what artists do. We probably haven't really veered off from the real intentions of this post at all. Artists share in more than one way with other artists. It's part of how we keep it all together for each of us, and among ourselves.

Erlo, Taking pictures of your self is not art OR is it?
Yes, it is an art if one is trying to do it in a particular fashion as opposed to just taking snapshots. They are called portraits if they are thought out as to how they are going to be for the poses and not just random pictures of a person in everyday situations.

Hi, Jan!
I am wondering how on earth you paint on the leaves! I am assuming that they are still fresh when you paint on them? What kind of brush do you use on them, if you use a brush? How do you keep them from curling up because they have gotten wet with whatever you are using for your paint? What do you use for the paint? Do you spray some kind of finish on them when you are done with the painting?
Enquiring minds need to know, you know! :)
Thanks!
Craig
I collect the leaves in the fall after they have fallen. I paint on flat ones as well as ones whose edges are curled. Those make the most interesting ones but they don't photograph well so didn't post. I paint on sycamore leafs a lot. They are the largest leaf in our area and look nice in a shadow box. I paint a pattern on the back of the back part of the shadow box to enhance or compliment the leaf painting. I use acrylic paints, flat brush and liner brush and always paint both sides, generally the back side is a solid color, no detail, but something to compliment the front. After they are completed, I coat both sides two or three times with Polycrylic, clear gloss. They look nice in shadow boxes or just to lay several in a display dish on a table. People generally want to pick them up, touch them, look on both sides so I like to display them in a tray or dish. The large ones need to be in a shadow box or framed behind glass someway. For the ones I display in the open, I just use a dry brush occasionally on them to dust the surface.

Hi. I did notice your post regarding milkweed pods. I have gone to the woods in search of items to place in dried flower arrangements. I have a very tall pottery vase, about 3/4 of my height. I found sage plentiful and cattails and added other treasures from the woods, some being milk weed pods. When I go, most things of this nature are already dried and have formed magnificent shapes. Some look like insects, others like exotic tropical flowers when painted bright colors, others quite dressy in a black vase with pods painted with Emperors Gold acrylic paint. If they are not dried, pop them open, clean them out and let dry in a warm room or put in a dehydrator. My knowledge of working with milkweed pods is very limited. I will see if I have some here and make sure they are the milkweed pods I am describing but I am pretty sure that is what they are called. If not, I will let you know ASAP... well... tomorrow. Sorry not to be positive about my information.

Hey Soul Sister! Do you have Milkweed Pods up your way???
Oh, you betcha! Two things are quite plentiful where I live - milkweed and burdocks. (Hence a LOT of butterflies and hours of brushing Thunder's coat as he tends to sit in the burdocks every day!)
Actually, Orangeville is something like the dragonfly capital of the world. It is amazing how many there are and how large they can be! Not that this has anything to do with Milkweed Pods! Hahahaha!
My sister makes angels out of milkweed pods. I must get her to do one and send a photo of it.
Jan, your leaf paintins are beautiful! I really like that idea and will probably steal it. What brand-name of acrylics do you use? Are they tubes or little bottles? Thank you, Craig for asking all the questions. Now I can steal Jan's ideas quite well! Hahaha!
Sean, I loved your most recent art! Have you ever considered doing art for computer games, advertising, animated movies, etc? You really do have a skill for it. I used to be on a computer graphics forum and these guys would have killed to be able to get art like that! Have you ever tried creating using computer graphics programs or worked with Adobe PhotoShop, Dreamweaver, Paint Shop Pro, CorelDraw, Xara, Corel Painter, ArtRage, SketchBook Pro or any other Digital Art software?
If you'd like to try some out, here is a page where you can read about them, and try some out: Art-Oriented Graphics Software (http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/designandcreate/tp/artsoftware.htm). Didi, great idea :)
I use photoshop, but have never really done much with it art wise
I have done some stuff using macromedia flash in it class I mite show you (dunno if this site supports flash files tho)
I'm not terribly great at flash movies, but I am okayish I guess, a lot of the flash stuff I did was actually just pictures with no movement/movieishness in them, just because I liked using flash to draw as opposed to other things like paint etc which suck lolz
Started carving up polystyrene with a hot wire cutter today, will take a camera to class next week so you gals/guys can get an idea of what its like
I was a bit worried at one point, because I looked across the table at one of my fellow art students, mark, who was wearing a mask and then I though... why is he wearing a mask? Maybe I should wear one
Turns out the fumes/smoke that comes of the polystyrene when the hot wire cutter disintegrates its way through the polystyrene may be somewhat poisonous!(if directtly inhaled) :0 so now I wear a mask, just to be safe (im a bit worried about the others, gosh? Don't girls have any idea of safety? Me and mark the only guys in the class, and we the only ones wearing masks! They girls also have been the only ones to cut themselves/glue there fingers together etc throughout the course of the class (its all been rather minor and the teacher takes care to warn us about stuff like that) lolz, art is bad for the environment too (the art students probably use 20% of the schools paper usage, and we probably responsible for a lot of the greenhouse emissions as we spray hair spray stuff etc to seal our works etc
But don't get all worried everyone art is much safer than you guys may think from this post lolz :)
Can't wait to see more art!
Lolz our art teacher accidentally melted part of my friend emilys sculpture! He put glue on it (the only glue that is good for the polystyrene is the glue from hot glue guns, other glues melt it, polystyrene is so weak! You can melt it with any aerosol/spray paint, with most glues, and we cut it with ease with wire cutters which work by just passing 2 volts through bit of metal wire which then just makes any polystyrene it touches disappear lolz)
(a hot knife through butter? Doesn't match up to a hot wire cutter through polystyrene)
Oops... looks like I babbled a bit and got carried away
Forgive me my long post lolz! This kind of art has got me excited lolz

Don't worry about the mask, I hotwired loads of plastic foam to no ill effect over the years. Hmm but than again I am a girl so maybe that's why I think it's OK!
I got high molarity HCl up my nose the other day, it's burny but almost nice... Ethyl ethanoate is my favourite noxious chemical smell, kind of like really strong salt and vinegar. I used to really like the smell of petrole when I was little. My charger caught on fire the other day and now I remember how rubbish burning plastic smells.

I'm going to see a medical person of sum kind soon got an appointment at some time I think to work out my sleep issues
hope to see lots more art soon
next 2 days are very valuable days! So much IT work to do (all the other students in IT get to play shooting games against each other because they handed all there IT work in, I have a few late assignements to hand in, then I can inflate my ego by thoroughly kicking against a bunch of girls who have no idea how to play or who's the enemy, and getting my ego deflated by the guys showing how much better they are than me at these games)
and hopefully on the weekend I can go scrounging at harvey norman for sheets of polystyrene foam :)

Hey Sis! I use both bottles and tube, depending on what surface I am painting on and what texture I want. If I am painting on leaves, I like bottle acrylics. They are already a smooth, even consistency and you don't want to have to work the leaf too much with the brush, although they are tougher than one would think. I like Americana in the bottle but have used several others. Sometimes, one has colors the other doesn't. I have always loved Grumbacher Tube paints, oil (although I no longer paint with oils) or acrylic. The colors seem more true and pure, seems to have lots of pigment. OK now Didi, I will be watching the thread to view your leaf paintings. :) They really are a lot of fun. I think you will enjoy much!
Please do post the angels made of milkweed pods!

Oh, Sean... it is so disheartening to read this post, and the next one. I am very, very sorry that you and your girlfriend broke up, but please remember that for every door that closes another one opens. It really is true - just give it time.
I understand you sometimes feeling that you can't imagine anything but failure, Sean, but it is so difficult for me to see someone with a kind, caring heart like yours (not to mention your present and potential talents) could really feel this way. I wish you could see success in your future, too, because sitting here on the outside looking in I can see so many possibilities for you! Sometimes you can't see the end of your nose for looking, I say! :)
Sean, you have to reach out and grab for the stars or you will only reach the bottom branches of the trees! Don't be afraid to reach up there, hun, because even though you may not grasp onto that star, you may just reach the top of the mountain that is holding you back. I promise you, Sean, your future is not one of failure, but of wonderful things. You just have to want it bad enough to fight for it and refuse to let the down times knock you to the ground.
Every single time something horrible happens in my life (and believe me, I had a 4 or so year run where EVERYTHING was horrendous!) I just refuse to let it get me down and work harder at making someone else's life a little happier. In fact, it just might be a good idea for you to consider 2 or 3 little things that you could do to brighten someone else's day every time that you are feeling down. You would be amazed at how good that will make you feel.
You are so young, Sean, and you have a lifetime of experiences awaiting you. Without the bad we never experience the good to it's fullest. Try to find a silver lining on every one of your clouds.
Sean, if there is something specific that you need help with, please IM me if you can't express it here and I will try to help. I suspect that there is something far deeper than breaking off with your girlfriend at work here. If you want to share, I will listen and try to help, or refer you to someone else who can.
Thanks for listening, Sean. I care about you... and I only care about the truly important things in my life.

Hiya, Jan! Just caught up with this thread and private PM's. Yes, of course I am available. Going to bed soon... have a visitor from Connecticut until Monday. :)
Oh goodness! I bet I missed you. I usually am sent a notice of a post and didn't receive one so kept doing some scanning of old papers of an uncle that has passed away for a CD for my sister and brother. Don't worry about getting back with me on this tonight. Enjoy your visitor and say hello from your Oklahoma friend and we will connect later! :)
Great advice for Sean! What a great future he has waiting for him!
Hugs back! :)

Oh, I have written an email to my sister for instructions and hopefully a photo of her angel milk pods. As soon as I hear back from her I will post her response.
Night, all...

It went well! Except that it is probably the last time that we will be playing at that hotel, because the management has changed, and they are really sticking it to our director concerning money matters. This is happening after the band having played at that location for 14 years. Sometimes as frequently as three times a year.

A few more beaded state stamps here. There are 24,000 beads in each one. I have some others and will post them here too. That third one is a beaded Woman of the desert. The fourth beaded image is a piece I am doing for my son and his new bride. I worked this pattern up from a photo I took on their wedding day. When it is finished it will contain 47,000 beads. The photo makes the piece look small but that's misleading, because it really is a large work. Those tiny black things next to it, bottom right, are the beads not yet threaded on the needle.
Hey there Chek!
I sure have been missing your posts on this thread. I showed your bead work to my sister who is in from Tennessee. She was just blown away by it. We didn't have a lot of time so I didn't get to show her all your work but told her about it.
I had one question. You mentioned doing bead work on a loom? Are the stamps done on a loom? You remember I shared with you about my little niece who does bead work and I wanted to tell her about the looms but have no knowledge of them. We would love to have information on this subject if you have time. Please post more of your art work.
Until later then.

I am currently working with a youth on another thread whom I think would be a likely and excellent candidate for this thread. You might want to have a look. I do know that she is interested in some art stuff as well as writing, but not poetry. She is highly intelligent and also seems to be very responsible. Plays several instruments. We are discussing acting. That is something that is right up my alley. Music and acting can go hand-in-hand!

Change is inevitable I suppose. I sure hate that for you and your group though. As I always say, "Every end is a new beginning" but it would be nice if they came across with the appropriate money for the job already completed. It would give the ending to your gigs at this hotel a sweeter taste. I would think the music industry would be difficult at best, the business end of it, not the joy of performing. I know you love that.

That's good! Please remember that you don't have to be on those things forever. I was for at least a few years. Then things got straightened around in the chemicals, or whatever in my brain. Have been free of taking anything for a number of years. But now, am feeling that I do need to be on something like or similar to what I was taking before.

I am starting a new commission piece. I needed to know what the old type of asbestos siding looked like up close. I stopped at a house to ask permission to photograph a section of the out side wall. The lady opened her door about there inches to let me explain. She gave permission. Ok, started to take the pic with my digital camera and no power. So I explained that and asked if I could come back tomorrow. She said yes so hopefully all will work out to do so. I am needing to know what sea shells are local to Long Island. Do you know?

I don't know. But, I bet Wondergirl would because she is a librarian. I will let her know about your question. Is this commissioned piece about a house that you will have to just imagine or is it concerning an existing home?

It is an existing bungalow. A gentleman had a Florida Beach House I did which I called, "Florida-Get-Away", you may have seen it on my web site. He was raised in a bungalow in New York and has a family home (ancestral) in Ireland. His lady in his life commissioned me to do the Florida home a year ago and now wants me to do the bungalow but does not have photo of how it was as her friend would want it done, with the original siding, original railing, wants me to take out all all structures around it in the photo for the drawing and wants no plants that are in the photo because all they had when he lived there were seashells in the front. It will come together. Just need to get my research done first. The Florida house took I think 47 hours to draw. The front of the drive was concrete the other part was crushed seashells. Everything in the home is white, everything! I can't remember how how many window panes I did but I think it was 152. I would have to look it up. This piece won't take as long.

I'm sure I can research on line and find local shells. As I told the lady, it won't be the focal point of the piece but just want to get it right. Part of that perfectionism some of us artists have you were talking about the other day! LOL But with me, it is basically just with my art.

From loving-long-island.com --
"Keep your eyes peeled for pretty shells. You'll see the usual assortment of clam, crab and scallop shells and during certain times of the year you will see shark, skate and snail egg cases. Sometimes, if you're lucky you'll even find small, quarter sized sand dollars."
If that's not specific enough, please call/visit your local public library reference department. They will find the information for you and maybe even call a library in that area.

Thanks so much for the information. We found lots of sand dollars in California when we lived there. Some shells called "Olives" in Florida. That may just be local terminology, (not sure) when we visited my sister there. The gal told me they are pretty much the same as in Florida. She just returned from a two week trip there. She mentioned polished glass pieces in New York but that would not translate when working in black and white.
Thanks again muchly! :) Ever need info about Oklahoma, just let me know! ;)

Yes, the drawings are sprayed with a sealer once completed. Let dry 24 hours. Then I take them to the printer and have the original scanned. He makes a .jpg file and a .tif file for him to use then matt and frame.
The prints I have printed are Giclee prints which is a process closest to the original you can get. The ink is archival ink and paper, always acid free. :) The prints also must be sealed to protect them. Once they are matted and framed, good for years and years!

The agreement I make with the person commissioning the piece is that if, upon completion, they are not satisfied with the piece, they owe nothing, I retain the piece. If they like it and purchase it, I retain the copyright on each piece although would sell the copyright to one piece if it was really important to a person that no copies ever be made. When I have it scanned, I always have one 8x10 black and white printed and one 8x10 sepia printed. At any given time, I can order any size I want even up to the size of my living room floor!! I can have my prints on paper or on canvas. Later, when I am needing more cards of several pieces printed, I e-mail my order and usually order around 80 cards. I have one line of my cards in a local store. I do bookmarks also but they are costly because you have to have them printed, then take them to have them (I am blank right now, plastic seal over them, then use a cutter.) If you have the store cut them, it is a dollar per cut. I use their cutter at no cost and do it myself. Last time when they watched me, they wanted to hire me to do them for the store. One of those perfectionism things they liked. LOL

Nov 12, 2007, 11:16 PM
Doesn't sealing affect the boldness and/or depth of the original drawing?
It is a spray flat sealer... has no effect whatsoever on the piece, other than protecting it. There is one sealer for canvas that takes longer to dry and one for paper that takes less time.

So, do you have some sort of written contract/agreement with the customers?
I have the pieces online and the copyright is on each page. The exchange is done by verbal agreement. I have not received commissions online except for one and that person eventually came to my home to discuss what he and his wife wanted. If I took a commission piece to do the business end of it strictly online, I would send an agreement for them to sign so that there was no question. My son-in-law is an attorney. He would write it up for me.
Most of my commissions come from people seeing my art in the shows or friends of friends or as example, my sign instructor. Some relatives but they get awfully good deals! LOL

Hiya, Craig! (and everyone else). It has been mostly family commitments that have kept me away, topped up with a dash of responsibilities. :) The months of November, December and the first few weeks of January are very, very busy ones for me at the best of times! My adopted daughter is going through some very difficult times right now so it has been important to be as available and supportive as I am able. I continue to job hunt, have been working on my book a bit, had a few other family issues that I was busy with, too. Then there is shopping for birthdays and Christmas on a very tight budget. Let me explain my dilemma...
In November I have 4 family birthdays - my brother, his wife, my mom's 'boyfriend', and my youngest grandson. In December... (oh my!) my sister, my nephew (her eldest child), my mom, my dad, my twin grandsons, my step-daughter... let's see... have I forgotten any?? - all have birthdays... so I am now up to 11. Then in January I have my granddaughter, step-grandson and my other nephew all celebrating birthdays. I am sure I have forgotten someone! Oh, and my Bernese Mountain Dog - Thunder will be 3 years old in January as well. Add all that to Christmas shopping for my parents, kids, grandkids... it's a lot! I also do up donation gifts for a boy and a girl of 3 different age groups - young, preteen, and teen as well as food for the food bank. This year I am also making some gift baskets for our local hospice to raffle off, too. So, as you can see I am VERY busy!
I am going to try to take some time off tomorrow night as I need a break! Actually, I just want to play! Hahaha!
I will also post some angels made with milkweed pods in the next day or two.
Talk to you all later...
Hugs, Didi

Dear firm,
Your baskets are really nice! Are these types of things that you also might want to sell in order to make some profit for yourself?

Hi Erica,
Hugs to you too.Hope things are OK with you.
Clough,
Thank you.
This was one of the things I had in mind, I am trying out a few gift shops for it.
Online sale is not much of an option as there are so many of these baskets out there, but in my community it is rare yet, which I hope to take advantage of until others start copying the idea;).

I know that you like certain types of music, firmbeliever. I am wondering what kind of instruments are involved in the music that you like?
I am into all sorts of music, not just classical and jazz. Someday, I hope to build a folk harp as well as a hammered dulcimer. I also want to be able to play them on a professional level. Those are four of my dreams that I want to accomplish and also live. I just love simple folk music! :)

So, are these sealers lacquer based, water based or, something else?
The Liquilam UV (is great because it protects work from effects of exposure to the sun) - liquid laminate is what I use on the canvases. It states that clean up is with mineral spirits, however, I have a line outside where I place my pieces to be sprayed and wear rubber gloves so never have clean up. Drying time is longer with this product. Second coat may be applied 1 hour later. Even though it says clean up is with mineral spirits, it also says wash hands with soap and water.
The SEM Color Coat (which I buy Clear), second coat can be applied in 5 to 10 minutes. I can't find where it says whether lacquer based or water based but I know it is not as heavy as the Liquid Laminate nor the same texture.
I have never used anything except soap and water for clean up for hands or arms if exposed to either but if sprayed heavily and allowed to set, clean up may be different. I know that doesn't fit with the normal formulas we think of as either/or water based/lacquer.
Both remain flexible!
Hope this information is helpful. I use the SEM on the #100 pound Vellum paper and the Liq-UV on the canvases. Avoid breathing either one. Spray outdoors if possible. :)

Are other members of your family as artistically inclined as you, Didi?
My dad enjoyed building and creating when I was young, my mom did arts and crafts with us. My sister is quite 'crafty', as is my eldest child. My grandmother on my dad's side was a dancer, as was her sister. My eldest daughter, her daughter, my son and I all enjoy writing.
My dad, my eldest child and I are avid gardeners and my mom enjoys it too.
I hate to say this, but I really don't feel I am artistically inclined. I dabble at a few things, learn that I don't have much chance at doing each of those things the way I envisioned it, and move on to other things. :P Probably the Gemini in me or something. Hahaha!

So, it would seem that your artistic ability has been passed down to you from one generation to the other.
It is interesting as to how many artists also seem to be avid gardeners. I am and I know that Jan is also.
It seem to me that there is also an art to gardening. Certainly there is with the harvesting and preparation for food of that which has been grown.

Yes, people can change. Sometimes it may take some time for the permanent changes to take place. Important word being "can." It's about choices. I really do think that there is hope in your relationship. It's just that sometimes you have to give some "tough love" in order to get things to change for the better.

I may not be on a lot as I am not feeling well and have some family issues that are taking a bit of a beating on me emotionally on top of all the birthdays, etc.
Oh, here are the instructions for the milk weed pod angels:
Use a pine cone for the body, milk weed pods (divided into halves) for wings, a golf tee for the trumpet, either an acorn or small wooden ball for the head. I have attached 2 pictures from the web... they are NOT my sisters or mine, but will give you a couple of ideas. One uses a salt shaker filled with different sized pearls inside as a body... very nice touch.

What other natural items do you use in your art? I really love it when I can use something that is just given to us in creation. It is here. LYRICS - Where Have All the Flowers Gone (http://www.arlo.net/resources/lyrics/flowers-gone.shtml)
It was written during a time when the United States was in a cold war with Russia and the U.S. was considering going to war with the North Vietnamese. The song is about love, life, war and death and the hope for PEACE! It has been sung thousands of times at peace rallies and in churches for youth gatherings, especially when there is some sort of armed conflict between nations.
I was thinking that maybe we could write a song on this thread. That would be art!

Hahaha, about the flowers! I use a lot of dried flowers and herbs as well as pressed flowers and leaves. I make pot pourri with the broken ones. I have made pine cone candle holders and larger wreaths and I decorate them with nut shells as well as very small glass balls, individual beads from tree garland and fake berries. I like wisps of baby's breath glued in them here and there, too. Sometimes I add little tiny foil 'presents' (tiny foil-wrapped boxes with gold stretchy rope ties for the ribbon and bows) and spray them with a very light glitter paint - usually a clear with gold or silver sparkles, depending upon my colour theme.
Years ago I used to paint cattails with acrylic paints - mostly just some bright colours in varying casual designs. Then I would seal them with a shellac or lacquer of some kind, arrange them in a pretty vase and gift those as a gift if we were invited over for supper or when doing Christmas visiting. They looked like they were made of glass and people really liked them.
I have used shells to decorate wooden photo frames, as well as dried flowers, seeds, leaves, etc. I have used minute touches of glue and created pictures of dried flower petals in a photo frame, too. Of course, I have made pet rocks, but no, have never painted them... remember, I never really painted a picture until after Terry died.
A friend of mine paints on old milk cans... now THERE is a wonderful medium! I remember when Terry and I were on our honeymoon in Tennessee... we bought pictures of houses in the woods and they put our name on little signs on the walkways or front of the house... even nailed onto the trees in the pictures. They were so cute. I realized after I had been here for about 3 months that I must have left them behind when I moved here. I was heartbroken. :(
I also make stepping stones and use a variety of things in the molds prior to pouring the cement... from little pine branches, feathers, and pretty stones to marbles and shells. I can't wait to visit my dad in Nova Scotia again. I will be right over to that ocean collecting some more shells! :)
What do you do with sage, Jan? I really want to try your leaf painting. Did you do them when they were green? I can't remember.
Hugs, Didi

Welcome, ChihuahuaMomma. I hope you will share some photos of your art with us soon. If you need some expert advice (or, in my case some not-so-expert ideas) you have come to the right place! :)

Do you use a router? I have one, but I have never used it yet! I'm chicken! :) I also have this really awesome Dreml tool with all the bells and whistles to play with. Hmmmm... might try that when I am snowed in!

Hey, thanks Christine! I would love to give you some direction in that! :)
Making basic picture frames isn't hard. I am sure that with your decorating skills that you could decorate one that is made of simple wood to look like it is a really expensive frame!
I do use a router. But, I haven't had to use one yet for the picture frames that I have made. Really simple and beautiful picture frames can be made of the everyday dimensions and shapes of wood that you might find at a home builder's store.
I also have a Dremel Moto Tool with all of the bells and whistles. It's fun instrument to use! I think that if I recall correctly, Jan also has one? (Going back a couple of months in my memory here. That's scary! I think that I might be getting "Oldtimer's Disease. Or does that begin with the letter "A?" hmmm..? )
Being chicken of using a router is a good thing! Even the most experienced users must exercise the most extreme caution when using that tool! One slip and...!!

I didn't know that you had German woodcarving relatives in your bloodline! That's what they do over the Winter! ;)
Hmmm.. Since I've got a Dremel Moto Tool, maybe I should consider going into a little dental repair work as a sideline? You gals wouldn't mind if I practiced on you first, would you? I mean, you would like to help me out to get me started, right? :D

I believe that the following link contains the original melody of the song. However, I haven't listened to it yet because my connection is so slow. Perhaps someone who knows can tell me if it's the original melody or not? Thank you!

Hey, GREAT IDEA, NOhelp4u!!
Sounds cruel! I... I... I mean... COOL! :D
Might as well take care of all the areas that are close together that need servicing! How about two for the price of one? Maybe even give the men a shave on top of that!
Could have a new category altogether for a specialist type of physician Not just E.N.T. Not just Brain Surgeon. Not just Dentist or Oral Surgeon. How about Headologist! Covers everything that way! :D
Teeth 'n Head Now, that does have a tinnitus... err... I mean ring to it! That could be on the shingle above our door! :)

I was plastering the holed and pitted primarily limestone foundation walls of a friend/customer's home. There is a certain artistry to doing it.

I took pictures today of a house with asbestos siding on it today so I could see the pattern in it for the Long Island Bungalow I am working on. Need to download them on the computer from my camera. The photo I am working from has new siding and the customer wants what was on it in the 1950's.

Yes, I would say so. Take photos! :) I am a great one for documentation!!
The more we visit on this thread, the more I realize how much more art entails. I tend to work in a box and have tunnel vision sometimes. There really is an art to plastering, carpentry, texturing walls, etc.
I bet you are tired. How long did you work on it?

I only worked on it about 4 & 1/2 hours today. Granted, it was cement work and very labor intensive, but, I was up incredibly late on this site last night! Got to quit staying up so late! :(
Unfortunately for this one, I haven't taken any before photos. There may be some portions that I have not worked on as yet that look as bad as the portions that I already have worked on, though. I will be working on this project again tomorrow. I will bring a camera.
The thing that makes it artistic, is because the surfaces of the foundation blocks had become so uneven because of weather and animal wear to them, that the brushing that I do on the plaster before it sets is kind of tricky in order to make it look just right. I am trying to preserve the look of the blocks in order to maintain the artistic and historical integrity of the home. I would say that the home is probably dated between 1885 and 1910.

I wouldn't be too worried about that. However, it is helpful when doing a longer reply to someone, to quote the user so that the sequence can more easily be seen. I especially do that when I know that we are about to make a page change and someone clicking on the link for the last page for a thread is going to be viewing the new page that has just appeared.

Labor intensive is right! Yes, you probably do need to get some rest for your day tomorrow. I am not one to sleep much either but it takes a toll when busy days await. Do take your camera. I bet you can find some areas that you have not worked on yet to show the difference. It is great advertisement for your talent. Always have a portfolio of the furniture you refinish, instruments you make, houses you restore. (My 2 cents worth anyway! :)
My daughter lives in a house built in 1915 I believe. I will send photos soon if you like. All hardwood floors, four fireplaces, etc. The previous owners while keeping some things the same, have added on to it. I have just been learning the past two years about the importance of maintaining the artistic and historical integrity of the older homes. Crystal's home is on the historical home tour in Tulsa but "nothing notable "happened there! LOL Just that is has a history. Hey, if we live long enough maybe we can count as needing to be maintained for artistic and historical value!! LOL My great uncle lived to be 108, died in his sleep on Easter Sunday morning. His brother died at 104 and their sister at 99 I believe. The oldest was the oldest WWI Veteran in Missouri prior to death of course. As you can see, it is after 1:30 and my communication skills are dwindling. Ha.
Seriously though, I and I am sure many others would enjoy seeing the process of what you are doing. Is the surface smooth, textured, rough, etc. How would you describe how the restoration surface will appear?

Instead of being the "most holy" foundation, I hope to make it look more like the way the foundation was. That would be mostly large blocks of limestone that have a very, shall we say, wavy appearance. Not quite the chipped brick look but more curves to the surface than it being perfectly flat.

I will keep it in mind about the page change but I doubt I will know exactly when that will occurs. It usually surprises me. LOL

Always good to know these things. Always a learning process, just don't expect people to get bent out of shape so easily. You know what they say, "Stay flexible so you bend and don't break!!!" Hey there! I get my eggs from different sources but always get them already drained and cleaned. They have to have a mixture of bleach with water set in them for a time to kill out salmanila after draining them. Not my cup of tea so to speak.
I found a place with Emus not far from here but just don't want to drain them myself. You are fortunate if your uncle has Emus. I can post photos of my emu eggs if you like tomorrow maybe. In answer to Jan, I just use a wet, two-inch wide paint brush to smooth out the plaster in different directions in order to imitate the original curves on the blocks.

Hi, all. Sorry I'm late. There are never enough hours in the day. Had a headache this morning. Took the meds immediately and it went away immediately. I must learn to do that more often instead of trying to weather it through or try over the counter meds that never work.

Tomorrow would seem to be the last day to be able to do any plastering. After tomorrow, temperatures are going to be dipping dramatically. I might be able to get all of the plastering done tomorrow. But, you know what? It's also supposed to rain! :(
In order to really complete the job, I would also like to paint the foundation in order to seal in the new plaster. That is, if she will let me do that. She's definitely kind of finicky in her spending habits. As you can see, this particular job might not be completed all the way to my liking, until the spring.
