Tomorrow would seem to be the last day to be able to do any plastering. After tomorrow, temperatures are going to be dipping dramatically. I might be able to get all of the plastering done tomorrow. But, you know what? It's also supposed to rain! :(

In order to really complete the job, I would also like to paint the foundation in order to seal in the new plaster. That is, if she will let me do that. She's definitely kind of finicky in her spending habits. As you can see, this particular job might not be completed all the way to my liking, until the spring.

I hope the rain holds off for you! From all you write, I know you are a bit of a perfectionist so I know you will want it to be just right. Hope it goes well for you. :)

Welcome back... and what a wonderful way to come back! Hope your exams have been going well, and the art exam goes even better. :)

Sean! I am so glad you are back! We have all missed your posts. "#13 Union Street" is so unique. Explain again the process?? When you explained it earlier, I just never was able to get the process in my head. I thought you were working from one big block but feel I misunderstood!! Thank you for posting. I bet you had a lot of fun with this piece. Was that painted with Acrylic paints?

Good to see you back! Keep posting! :p

Here are two fall wreaths that I made. They've been tucked away in a bag in the basement for awhile, so a little 'scrunched' up. I just photographed them as they were. I would fluff them up a bit before using them again.

Didi, those wreaths are so cute. I sort of feel like the little guy in the second one, just not as cute. LOL

How did you attach everything? Glue, pins, etc.

Do you use these just for your home or do you sell them? They are as good as I have seen in any store. Thanks for sharing. :)

Thanks, Jan. I use a glue gun for almost everything I do. I had glued chestnuts to these wreaths, but the skins shrivel up with the glue and they fall off so I removed them all. I just made these for my house... and I used a photo of one to make a really cute webset for a webpage I did about fall in Canada. It was the first time that I used straw wreaths for anything. Usually I use grapevine wreaths. I was going to make more to sell. I have more of the little witches and scarecrows. The leaves, rafia and hats are easy to get. The strawflowers came from my garden. I probably have rafia here too. I still have a room full of crafts & supplies packed in boxes and large plastic containers in the basement... I'd bet about $2000 to $3000 worth of materials.

Thank you for your compliment.

Hugs, Didi

Aaaww cute wreaths
Union street is a drawing I posted earlier, one of the ones I did in artline
The sculpture is based of one of the structures portrayed in that drawing.
I assembled 13# Union Street from components I made by hot wire cutting up pieces of polystyrene foam, which I then painted white, and drew all those lines and stuff on them with thick artline permanent markers, and I then used a hot glue gun to put it all together (I accidentally stuck my finger into hot glue in the process! Owies :s) but the pain didn't really bother me (masochist tendencies actually do have their uses sometimes) so I kept working lolz.
Ummm its about this tall of the table *holds hand above table to demonstrate height* hehe :p
Didi, those wreaths are sooo cute!
And firmbeliever, thanks for msn messaging me lolz its great to talk to great people.

Glue gun, huh?? Have to laugh since you know my motto is "If you can glue it, I can do it!" LOL I didn't realize that about chestnuts. Good to know. I know what you mean about having a room full of supplies and finished and half-finished pieces. I just went through quite a bit of it and am giving it to my niece. She has a little booth she keeps items in... not quite sure what it is. I have not seen it but she says garage sell items go better at that location than crafts but one can always allow the children to paint wooden pieces for teachers gifts, etc. so hopefuly, she can benefit from the items. I do not like to waste.

You deserve the compliment! I hope you have a "Happy Thanksgiving"!

Thought it was my camera or cable but tried scanning something today and the scanner wouldn't work... oh well... tomorrow is another day and if tomorrow never comes, it won't matter anyway! LOL

Hehe
Well, I think I may have JUST passed my maths exam (I hope)
Human bio was pretty easy, and for art, I finished an hour early, and spent my whole extra hour sharpening a pencil (I sharpened it all the way down to that little black bit and the back end of it)
I reckon I did pretty good in the art one though, I always do, just I work quickly and finish quickly lol.
My parents just refused me permission to spray paint the xmas tree black :(
Had the kewlest idea, I reckon the xmas tree would look so cool if I spray painted it black, put red tinsel on it, but red and black bulbs on the lights, and then hang like little skull and razor decorations on it... okay, so maybe not exactly the most joyous and xmasy sounding thing, but itd look so awesome! And then I could like get candles all around the room and light them, and coud have like a goth looking angel on top...
Meh, next year I'm going to buy my own tree and do that :) it'll look soooo awesome!

cal823
Nov 25, 2007, 06:15 AM
Hmmm? I just kind of like razors lol. And theyd fit the theme of the tree as well as the little skull things and stuff. Be kind of like a halloween tree or sumting lolz.

Clough
Nov 25, 2007, 06:18 AM
So, why would the skulls and razors fit the theme of the tree? I'm not sure what you mean by that.

cal823

Black + red, its like, a gothic tree or something (id use the term "emo" if I didn't hate that word) and the other stuff fit with that lolz.

Sean, so glad to see you back on the thread! Glad exams went well. I had to smile when I read that you finished an hour early on your art exams. Just reaffirms your enthusiasm for art.

My grandmother had asthma really badly. My dad went out, cut down a small tree for her living room, in the early winter, making sure it was well-cured (dried). Spray painted it silver. Grandmother hung all her ornaments and beads, etc. just as you would on a tree with pine needles, etc. That was the only kind of Christmas tree I ever saw in my grandmother's home and it was beautiful to me. I guess growing up with it, I never thought it strange or different from ours, it was just a great Christmas tree that was constant. You wouldn't remember the older ornaments, much more detailed than the ones now. I barely do but wish I had at least one to place on our tree for the memories. You might consider just cutting down a small tree after all the leaves have fallen, spray paint it black and maybe your parents would allow you to have it in your room and enjoy your creativity without it infringing on their traditional tree.

I got to say, it does sound cool. I like the idea of the red tinsel and bulbs. Can you visualize a little tree, about five feet tall, just the limbs, no pine needles, (oak maybe, not sure what daddy used) but was not a pine tree at all), spray painted black in your room, with the red? I would love to see it.

I would however not want the skulls and razors. Just doesn't represent to me what Christmas is all about but I do love your originality of your idea. Quite creative. If you do this project, please post a picture but I would like to see it without the scary stuff! LOL Okie Dokie??

BiWiccanAndProud

I'm doing a recreation of a painting done in the renaissance period in renaissance style. Everyone was supposed to do the Mona Lisa but we could do another painting if we wanted to. I'm doing "Small Cowper Madonna" by Michelangalo. Here's what it looks like so far... not a very good picture though... I took it with my cell phone and sent it to my computer.5380

Jess, the site is moving slow. I posted an answer a few minutes ago but not sure it posted. Just want you to know it is great seeing your work posted. Love your use of colors. So, since you are trying to imitate the style of Michelangelo, are you also trying to give this painting more of a three-dimensional as opposed to a two-dimensional look?

Well I'd like it to look just like his but... I'm no where close... I'm not all that good with shading and am having trouble with the woman and the babis skin as well as the woman's blanket. Also I'm having trouble with the sky. I haven't really worked on the background cause I want to get the people done. Her shirt is the only part of this whole painting I'm really happy with! I'm just glad that I am finally getting somewhere with their skin... I've spent so many class periods on their skin!! As for the sky... I just don't know quite how to do it... I'm mostly for bright colors... so the sky is hard for me to do. Here's a picture of Michelangelo's original "Small Cowper Madonna"

These kind of go along with the refinishing pictures that I have posted previously on this thread. A couple of statues that were broken and also in many pieces. I think that they are supposed to be W. A. Mozart and his wife, Constance. They kind of "broke up" with each other. But, I got them "back together," again! :p

Yes, I get it and also like it a lot! Sounds like it could be on one of the inside verses after the initial question as to where they have gone and where they are now. But, it could also work in the beginning stanza.

(Gotta go! Sent you an email.)

As far as me, I have been playing gigs on piano with the Johnnie Kaye Orchestra. The Quad City Wind Ensemble, where I play string bass and percussion, is on a break until after the first of the year.

Just tonight though, when I was cleaning up my home some for a new piano student that I will be starting today, I found enough spring steel to make the notes for at least four or five thumb pianos! I think that jrebel7 will be excited about that! I didn't know that I had any extra spring steel outside of what I have already put on the thumb pianos that I have made.

I'm glad that you are Jan! I am too! What this means is that I already have enough of the parts that I need for thumb pianos in order to make at least four or five of them the way that I usually make them. Maybe even more. Don't know... But, I do know that I'm set to make at least that many right now! I'm glad that I did find some of the blued, tempered spring steel. In order to purchase it, I know that the last time I ordered a roll of it, that the cost was close to $90.00! That was enough spring steel for about 250 thumb pianos with 12 notes each.

Hey FB!! I was so happy to see your cards. They are gorgeous. What is interesting to me about your work is that the design, while coming across to the viewer as soft and pleasant to view, the detail is much more intricate than first meets the eye. I viewed them once, saw the colors, pattern, lettering, etc. and thought, "How amazing to do such beautiful work for someone to receive as a card" then really began looking at how much detail was there. I loved them. Thanks so much for posting and sharing! More please as soon as you have time. :p

Thank you Jan,
The red cards are folded twice, it has one fold of paper over the other. The side border design is actually on the fold under the first fold.
I couldn't attach a picture of the cards open, something's the matter with my net and the Desk does not load as fast as it used to.

I have searched the internet but keep coming up with the ones with pattens and not like I am thinking would have been worn on a daily basis in the old west days here in the U.S. If any of you have paintings or sketches of such that would be authenitc style for the era, would you post your work and share with us?

It's been awfully quiet on this thread for awhile. Not the many posters that we used to have here. At 1,500 posts this thread is done. I hope that it will not simply die here and that we can finish it out with quality instead of quantity concerning posting of works of art and the discussions about the same. Hopefully, another thread will be started when this one is finished. Having a thread just simply devoted to art, artists and what we do seems to be a really worthwhile subject area that is worthwhile to continue.

By the way, my post here is #1367 in case anyone wants to know where we are at in terms of the count.

Wanted to share the commission piece I just finished. I posted earlier, part of it in progress. I had hoped to do a detailed work in progress of it but my photos didn't turn out as clear as I had hoped because of lighting. A photographer, I am not! Sadly. I do fairly well with a 33 mm but this new digital one, not as well.

This piece is called "Breezy Point Bungalow". This is one of many bungalows on a stretch of land just off Long Island, New York. A gal's friend grew up in this bungalow and it is still owned by the family. She wanted this drawing to give as a gift to her friend but wanted changes made from the photograph I was given of it as it is today, to how it was in the early 1950's. I was told to leave out plants and replace with sand and sea shells, use the narrow door, not the one there now. Add a wagon as each bungalow always had one to use while marketing. The flag was important to the family and from photos I saw earlier, other bungalows flew a flag also. The gal wanted the old railing, not the existing one, and the patio furniture used in the 1950's, not what was in the photo given me but she was able to provide enough for me to know how to do the furniture. The bungalows are side by side so does not look like this drawing if you saw it in person but the gal requested I leave out all other structures and just have sand around the bungalow. She requested asbestos siding rather than the new siding that is now on there so I photographed a house with that type of siding so I could look at the detail, not being familiar with it. Also, I posted earlier a little bit on this and mentioned needing to research the shells that would be local to that area and Firmbeliever was kind enough to do that research and posted links for me to view. Thank you FB so much. That was a great help. You are always such a blessing! :p

Others have been encouragers and I appreciate it. The drawing took a minimum of 33 hours drawing time, that is "pencil to paper" time. The original measures 15" by 10 1/2". I don't charge for the research time, going to photograph siding, studying the structure, just the drawing time only.

Thank you FB for starting this thread. I hope we do see it go out at 1,500 posts with many more postings of art work! Each of you who have posted, have brightened my day and inspired me to create more and better art work. Thanks to each of you!

Bi-Number three hands down because of all the intersesting textures, perspective, colors, etc. Short time to do the work though by Friday?? Maybe not with all the perspective unless you work really fast! Do you have to do the whole photo or could you use just the center part, cropped?

BiWiccanAndProud
Dec 18, 2007, 01:30 PM
Medium? Do you mean what I'm painting on or the paint? If it's either one of those I'll be using acrylics and it's on canvas. I want to do two or three... they are the two I really like but with two I'm not sure how well I could paint the close up ice and with three I'm not sure how well I would do with the colors. I've never painted ice before so this is a bit of an experiment for me. Anyone have any clue how I could do this? My art teacher said it would be really challanging but I'm not sure even HE has ever painted ice so I doubt I'll get much help from him.

Yes, I was meaning acrylic, oil, watercolor, pastel, etc. Do you know how to float color? I have never painted ice liike is in your picture but I think floating would be a technique that might be of use. It would be similar to painting a dew drop on a rose or a tear drop on a face but I would think more opaque. I am anxious to see your work on these.

I just started floating color a few years ago. I don't always use the technique but it works well on some projects. It is more of a tole painters technique but whatever works, right?

Clough
Dec 18, 2007, 02:02 PM
From my perspective, number three is the most interesting and worthwhile to do in terms of doing it in some sort of hands-on type of medium. But, in order to paint it, that is a lot of detail that needs to be worked out. Numbers one or two would seem to be easier to do as far as painting. Just my opinion.

BiWiccanAndProud
Dec 18, 2007, 02:03 PM
I know what your talking about but I'm not sure I could do it. How do you do it? Is it down in layers? Do you have to water down the colors significantly so as not to lose the color underneigth the ice?

I was thinking about two clough but I'm not sure I could paint the ice up close like that. As said I've never painted ice... snow yes, but ice no.

Clough
Dec 18, 2007, 02:16 PM
In my opinion, the number of shadings and colors that you would have to do with number two would make it much easier to do. I don't think that you have to be concerned about seeing anything through the ice. I would just water down the color to make the ice look as crystalline as possible. I hope that makes sense. I'm sure that Jan knows a lot more about that then I do.

jrebel7
Dec 18, 2007, 02:46 PM
Bi, Floating color:

1. Dilute the paint with water to ink consistency, and mix it well.

2. Load one corner of a flat or angular shader brush by dipping it into the diluted paint.

3. Blend the paint by wiping the brush on your palette until the color gradually fades to the opposite side.

This is so that the concentration of color is only on one side which allows for highlighting or shading. Sorry I dropped out for a bit. I had to wash my hair to get ready to go to the Nursing Home to help my mother with dinner and bed time. I posted how I do the technique in depth earlier on a different post but can't locate that particular post. I will look for it later when I get back home.

jrebel7
Dec 18, 2007, 02:50 PM
Bi, I looked back at your photos just now and you would need to float both sides of each limb after painting the limbs but it would be an effective way to show the ice. I will check back tonight if you should have any other questions that I might be able to help with. I know there are others here that might be able to give you better information but for now... I will say... until later then!

Thanks so much rebel you're a great help!! I have decided to do the one with the building behind it. Mostly because the only other one I though I could paint was the second one but my teacher said and I qoute "It makes a great photograph! But it would not do as a landscape painting". So the 3rd one it is! So far I'm just putting down the base color (I decided that with the color of the bricks that yellow ocar would work best). I'm finding painting on canvas really difficult though!! Putting down this first coat of paint is really hard! I think I liked painting on the boards better >.< they didn't soak up the paint!

Sure, you're welcome! It helps to get other's input on projects, that's for sure. You are right, some photographs don't translate well on canvas but are gorgeous photos and those photos are gorgeous!

I know what you mean about the canvas. One thing I do is purchase the "smooth" canvas but if it is still has too much texture, just put a coat or two of Gesso over it, let dry between coats and can even sand with a light buff between coats for an even smoother surface. Sometimes, I like a lot of texture in the canvas and sometimes not, depending on project. If I am going to have the piece scanned and Giclee prints made, masonite board would work better but for an original piece, I love canvas with the Gallery Wrap.

Please post your work and let us see at least a few while in progress. I am anxious to see it. I look forward to seeing what you do with this piece! Happy Painting!! :)

I would like to see the finished project you were working on, can't recall the name, but was a rendition I believe of Madonna and Child??

There is Gesso on it, it's still a pain though, and I made it as smooth as I could. I got the experience of MAKING my own canvas. It's a great deal of work, but when I started on the painting it was with a canvas that wasn't mine! Someone else accidentally took mine and I got theirs! Mine was all smooth and ready, but this person's wasn't and I had to smooth it with sandpaper all over again!

It's really good so far guys! As soon as I can I will post a picture of it! I have so far gotten the fences done, the sidewalk, and some of the trees between the brick walls done. It took me four hours just to do that! It looks really good though! My micelangolo was terrible, but that's cause I'm bad with people, landscapes though I can do ;)

The reason I found it terrible bushg was cause I'm terrible with shading... and skin tones >.< I spent about 2 weeks just on their skin before I got it right. That's 5 class periods with my art teacher, our class are an hour and a half long! It was so hard for me, I've never been to good with people except with drawing anime. Thank you though for your compliment ^.^

Hi there! Loved your post. I would like to read a little detail on each attachment. The first one appears to be computerized art from a photograph, is that correct? The tree is just amazing. I loved seeing all your work. Please do give us a little information on each when you have time. Thank you.

Rank amateur here, most of the stuff I have is dig photog

First is a cropped dig pic of my son, and there was some photoshop processing... think I threw on a layer over the top, fairly transparent dry brushed if I remember, no color enhancements.

Second is a tree that's on the outside corner of a shed in rural Mississippi, wife's grandparents home... ill attach the original photo. I like the shed, but the light is pretty harsh and I just had time to take a quick shot or two. Again, photoshop processed for sepia filter and some other layers to texture it a bit. Again, I do what I like to it... not necessarily what a pro might do. Still learning the basics.

Third is a string of big bobbers or floats, each about a foot and a half in diameter that were hung on the backside of the shed. Processed again for the effect I thought looked interesting.

Next is my son again, one day old. Again photoshopped. The processing is never, ever satisfactory when it comes to freehand artistic stuff... but again, it took a pic that wasn't optimal and hid some of the imperfections and made something different and interesting. This is one I'm hoping to do a version of freehand at some point.

Last is dig pic of a tree outside my house after the ice storm came through about 2 months ago.

Most of what I have is pics or processed pics. A few pencil pieces. We'll see what I can find.

Here's the original shed pic with the tree...
5745

And the original of the floats on the back of the shed.

5744

Open to suggestions and comments, and negative critical comments are always welcome. Always nice to know what others would do differently.

Thank you for sharing information on each attachment. Hey kp2171, I would not rank you as an amateur. I love each piece, the original and the artistic version. I have a friend in Tulsa who does computer art and does really well at the "Fine Art" shows. It definitely takes talent. I have tried my hand at it but not much good so I will just enjoy viewing your and Nick's and others who just do amazing work. I look forward to seeing more of your work. sons picks were crappy point and shoots... the one where he's cradled was borrowed, the closeup was sony cybershot dsc-p10... that's dead now, thank the Lord.

the trees and the floats were with a nikon d40x w/ a 18-55mm lens. Been happy enough with it so far, but haven't had long. Personally, I wanted to buy the d40 or another model and put more $$ into glass, but my wife doesn't always frame things well so she wanted this one, knowing the lenses would cost more and knowing that I thought there were some other good options... but like I said, I've been happy so far except when id like a lens I don't have... yet.

Lol my art is going good I finally got my camera working and as soon as I get home I'm going to take a picture of that painting! I haven't worked on it in a while so it hasn't progressed much since I started before christmas. I'm now in an advanced art class and in pottery and sculpture. Unfortunately we are mostly doing lectures in pottery *tear* it's even more boring for me cause I'm in pottery two (all the pottery classes are put into one). Since I'm pottery two I just had to do designs while pottery one got the lectures. I got all my designs for my pots and sculptures done within the first two classes... so I hope we get to do some pottery soon!! I'm ready to get my hands into so clay!

Hello everyone
I'm back from a week of camping in albany, it was awesome. Amazing thing, is in about 10 years or so, all of the pelicans there will have learnt how to dance. Im not kidding.
Kp, that stuff looks awesome. Is good to be seeing awesome artwork again.
I was going to buy some original art done by the albany art group, but I'm saving for a laptop and they didn't suit my personality or room enough to buy them at the moment.
Oh well. There was also this old whaling station, which was the last operational whaling station in west australia, (it closed down eventually), though it was still running when my dad was a kid, he even visited it. I got some cool photos of whale skeletons and stuff, so will post them and maybe do some pastel works or photoshopped versions of them later :)
Hoping to see some more awesome artwork soon :)

It was great seeing new work on this thread. What size are your mosaics? When you have time, please write short description of what you used on the glass (oil or acrylics) and what you used for the filler between. I did mosaics a lot of years ago and I can't recall if I painted the glass, broke it, then glued it? Then what I used to fill in spaces.

Each of your pieces offer something new and different to the viewer. Please post more of your work. These were delightful. :p

No I haven't posted on this thread before but I looked through some of the work and think it is brilliant!

The mosaic tiles aren't painted, they are coloured glass tiles that my art tutor supplied for me, and the filler between is just ready made grout, sometimes just use ordinary plaster/filler in between if I'm low on money, it goes further too.lol I use PVA glue to stick them down. I sometimes colour the filler that I use too, I put acrylic paint in with the mix.

The sizes of the mosaics are in between A1 and A2 size, I have them stored at my parents so I can't get the measurements.lol

Going for a job interview on Weds to run a mosaic class at a community centre, wish me luck!lol

Thank you for your reply! I appreciate the information. I do wish you the best on your interview. Keep us posted! I am wanting to begin doing some mosaics again so your post was so timely. Are your mosaics on thick board? The ones I did were but makes them so heavy. You mention sizee A1 or A2. Would that be approximately 8x10 inches, 11x14 inches, one foot by two foot. I am not familiar with A1 or A2. You will learn that I am always full of questions.

Again, best of luck to you on your interivew! :)

Its on ply wood, around 1cm thick, the wood is quite light on it's own, but sometimes can be quite heavy if I use tiles that are usually used for bathrooms etc, usually call tiling shops and ask for their broken tiles.lol The sizes of the two mosaics are approximately 23x33 inches.

The technique I used in the last three paintings doesn't really have a name as far as I know.lol I just enjoyed having a flow of the paint visible in my paintings, like movement within it. It's more interesting to me if it's raised and feels nice to touch.lol

Thought I would share part of a set of pencil drawings I did. I took sign language classes and the instructor wanted drawings of her hands signing her name. This is the first three letters of her name. I took photographs of her hands signing her name and worked from those. Later tonight, I will post the finished product matted and framed. Got to run for now.

Just realized in the images attached, I scanned from album so had the third letter in horizontal position. It would be vertical like the other two. :)

I found the photo of the matted and frame piece so will post before I have to run for a bit. The gals name is TORPY and the images are the letters of the alphabet for the deaf for her name. If you don't sign but use the alphabet only, it is called "fingerspelling". Beautiful language. :)

Here are a few pieces that are typical of me.

The first two are oil pastel on bristol board, 14x17, both done near Gore Mountain in New York. The very first piece is of the Hudson River. Working outside was so much fun. We spent every afternoon of an entire week outside painting.

The second two are of a fabric sculpture done for a show at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Massachusetts. Theme was New Digs for the Dog (reinventing Snoopy's abode, from the Charlie Brown comic). It's fabric, crochet and beadwork built over a metal frame.

Excellent work posted above! I love seeing the variety of what you do! What did you make the canopys of the trees out of in the fabric sculpture?

Each was an ornamental twig ball (attached to the top of a metal tube), covered with poly-fil stuffing (I think) tacked (stitched) in place, that was covered with the fabric tacked in place. The webbing is a crocheted net made from thread (yarn) removed from the same upholstery fabric that covers the base of the sculpture (crocheted in place--whose bright idea was that). The hanging threads are decorated with fimo and/or sculpey beads made to coordinate.

Remembered more than I thought I did. Must have blocked the pain of trying to get that thing done on time. Oh, wait--there it is.

I keep coming in here to say hello and see and say stuff....I love wood and fabric, I suppose I will get busy with something soon to share, but I usre enjoy seeing and getting new ideas!! Hugs to all.

Yes, it would be good to see some of your art posted startover22! I would really enjoy that! Do you already have some images of things that you have done? What is it with wood that you do? Doing things with wood is really the element that I am most comfortable working with as far as the visual arts are concerned.

I should rephrase this... instead of getting my art on, I should get my crativity on. I sure do enjoy free hand cross stitching, each time I do one, I feel there is improvement in the next... I haven't ever taken pics. I suppose I could do one maybe very soon. I will take a pic when I am done.
With the wood, I love to do stencils and some painting, or just stripping down an old piece of furniture and painting it. I haven' done any of that in a long time. Not enough kid free time for that right now. I love to make antique looking signs, and now that I am talking about it, I miss it so much. I am getting all excited... tomorrow I shall go old barn wood hunting!
As far as carving wood, sharpening a good marshmallow stick is as far as I go with that.. Heehee!

Hey there,

I purchased the cut out blanks at an art show I attend once a year. It comes in three pieces and after painting, you put hinges in place so it hangs on a wall, closed to show the outside of the ark or open to show Noah and wife and animals, two by two. :p

It was a fun piece to do. I can't take credit for the pattern. It came with the blanks. It took me forever to paint. I am generally a fast painter but it took awhile to get the colors just like I wanted them and the cartoonish style is not my strong suit but it was a fun piece to paint.

When I began the project, my married children asked me, "Who gets this"? I laughingly told them, "The first one to give me a grandchild." Of course, I know that had no bearing on their decisions for the timing of their pregnancies :p but it has been a fun little joke in the family. It went to my firstborn grandchild, a grandson, Benjamin. He is seven now and it still hangs in his room.

I have painted pieces for each grandchild except my fifth. I am looking for a special project for her now. She will be my last unless the kids chose to adopt, which they have talked about from time to time. Then I may be painting from now on. LOL

I hope you enjoy viewing this as much as I enjoyed painting it. :)

In art lately we have been learning and media testing with felting, estapol, dissolvable vilene, batik, salting, dies, etc.
Not my usual area, but I suppose I can handle it and do something with it.

My latest puttering... a virtual AMHD flower delivery for everyone.

Pic of the flowers that'll be on my wife's vanity on valentines morning. As usual with me, photoshopped for softening, contrast, and some texture. Putting the real deal on her vanity, and a pic in a frame for her work.

Happy valentines day.

Top pic is "original" with the slightest lightening (taken in mid-low light), bottom is processed for some grain that isn't showing on screen well and burlap texture. Probably not going to use that one.

Thanks.

Tried to switch out pics for a better one, but now I have multiples. Top is the original with very minor lightening, bottom has multiple layers, and while I favored this at first, the texture is too much. I can tell already I'm not going to use it. I have about 4-5 versions that will be printed, each with different processing... so we will see which one "wins" out... I'm hoping for less processed, but the area in which I took the pics had some surface blemishes, and I had limited time to minimize shadows, so we'll see what it looks like. While I sometimes prefer some of the processing effects, honestly it often helps me deal with imperfections and "problem" areas in the pics when I don't have time to take a lot of shots or do a lot of adjustments.

The colors on film are always more vibrant than on my old screen, and darker pics on screen tend to look lighter as well... so sometimes I know nothing until the pic is in hand.

All I know is in two hours something will be framed and done. A little last minute, but I hadn't planned on doing this until I liked the arrangement. I need to practice more still life.

*fyi - top shot was selected after printing. Was great with low light so the flowers lacked extreme "photographic" detail, but enough soft light to have some contrast... the pic looks softer on film*

I like how well the red works with the blue bottle supported by the warm white tulips. And the crisp green makes the simplicity of the arrangement very elegant. Did you select the tulip colors based on their aesthetic appeal or do they have a symbolic meaning?

Kp, don't leave us blowin' in the wind here. How did your wife enjoy her gifts of flowers and photo for her office? Not asking personal here, just wanting to know she appreciated the effort that went into the gift. :p

My sister-in-law loves anything with strawberries on it so I painted her an Ostrich Egg with strawberries. It isn't one of my best or favorites but she enjoyed receiving it. I did like the back of it. I did a wash of three colors then using the dots, along with the natural pebble like texture, it almost appears to be quilted. The greens were a little brighter and deeper than I wanted but tried many other combination of colors and this is just what I ended up with.

I enjoy so much seeing everyone posting art work. As I said, this isn't my best but wanted to share.

The one with the cardinals was commissioned. Seems I work a lot in areas not my forte but then, we never know until we try, right?

Jan, thanks, I am not going to get real serious as if I do it comes out perfect and I like the kind of messy look best with these type of things. It is more like a sampler... but as simple as can be so the message stays clear. It takes a bit of time, but not because I am careful, it just takes time. I am a fast worker so perfection is not my thing, not sure why I can't take on a project like most of you, maybe that is why I like old ratty things.
Clough your table, wow... very good work, I had a few pieces I re did in Alaska, and now I wish I had taken before and after pictures. I started making old things look brand new, then I found new things and made them look old. I fell in love with the chipped paint and the wear on the knob from someone using it so much that you could see it right there. I love antiques and pretty things. You did a really fine job on the table Clough... I suppose I could do that to my drop leaf table, but I kind of like the scratches and chips... (maybe after the kids leave the house I will re do all of my pieces, then I wouldn't worry if they will scratch it up or not!)

Hey, thanks starover22 for the compliment! Much appreciated! I do have many more before and after pictures of items of furniture that I have refinished. But, I am going to wait to post them on a new thread such as this, and/or one that is devoted to the refinishing projects that people have done. I would greatly enjoy sharing with you about the ins and outs of refinishing, if you would like. I have been doing it a very long time now.

I do understand what you mean about liking things that have some imperfections in them. Liking them and recognizing their beauty as such, is an art and also reflects an appreciation that you have for the character that a piece has because of the way that it looks according to the use that it has had through the decades. There are a lot of antiques that we would dare not to change the appearance of, because doing so would destroy the integrity of the piece.

I remember years ago, a table that my old orchestra director from high school and his wife had in their kitchen. There was a notch that was left in the edge of the table. Having the notch there always seemed to bring questions from people who saw the table, even though the table was beautifully refinished. But, there was this notch in it...

The notch was where the previous owners had always cut the chicken's heads off!

That was a table with character and a story behind it!

Well fellow artists and art enthusiasts, this thread is winding down to a close because it will be closed at 1,500 posts. Less than 25 posts to go here. But, hopefully another thread will be started like it where we will "wind up" again with our enthusiasm for things devoted to the arts in various ways!

It's probably best that threads like this don't go on forever. After awhile, it becomes really hard to find the posts where really significant and enjoyable things to view and discuss have been posted. For instance, it took me quite awhile to find the page on this thread where I had posted the images of the table that I had refinished.

There is so much to be appreciated on this thread by those who have posted images or descriptions of their art and also the techniques that have been used to create the art! But, for the sake of clarity and cataloging, it would be best to start again and perhaps make a thread such as this one easier to follow and to find things. Maybe, renewing images and posts with helpful information within a new thread might be a possible answer to that.

This site gets excellent coverage when people do searches for answers to things on the Internet. So, I don't see a problem with posting some information again that has already been posted so that the information is easy to find, especially concerning the techniques that folks have used to create the art that they have created. It would be most helpful to people if it would be easy to find the information as to what they are looking for.

There is an art to snow, a poetry, emotions... God creating art on the face of the earth. Food for thought as to the events of the seasons and our lives... I love the snow, and I also despise it at the same time... Snow is peace and hardship, beauty and ugliness rolled into one... Snow is fun! But, snow is also sad... Snow can bring out the best and also the worst in us...

Clough is so right, snow has two faces.

MY greatest joy was waking up early before anyone else had a chance to make tracks in the snow. I used to wait until the crack of dawn and sneak out on the porch.
Across the road and to the left , on a small hill, was an old weathered grey barn, that my great grandpa had built and it had the barbed wire fence and wooden fence post. The background was a large hill and to the right a patch of pine trees and a creek below. The creek ran in front of my house and there was a one lane bridge, directly in front of it.
It was such a site to see the rocks in the creek extra large from the snow that mounded atop them and spilled over into the small creek. I was always amazed how the snow could pile so how on those little barbs without spilling over or how the tree branches swayed so close to the ground, covered in snow, but under the tree it would be so cave like, soft and dry, a perfect place to sit, a carpet of pine needles and the smell was perfect. The beauty of it was breath taking. Nothing else can quiet the sounds of the earth like a blanket of snow, even the creek was quite on those mornings.

Thanks for talking about the snow and posting the pictures. This is one of my fondest childhood memories. My mom still lives there and some winters she sends me a picture of the same barn that I am talking about, although it is in disrepair now. Mmm the good memories...

OLD TRAPPER'S CABIN
Written by Jan Bolinger
(To be read as if written by a young boy as a grown man)

As the winds begin to blow the cold air in from the high country, I begin feeling a familiar stirring in my spirit. Every year when I was young, my dad would take me to a cabin where his father had taken him when he just a boy. His father before him had built this simple wood cabin high up in the mountain area where he would spend the winters trapping which helped supply provisions for his family for the next year. Fur brought a good price then. The streams provided ample fish which, along with the provisions he took from his home town, kept him adequately nourished.

The first time my father took me on this adventure, I could not sleep the night before. I was too anticipatory of the adventures to come. I remember seeing a photograph of my great grandfather as a man of considerable years. He had a scar across his face. It frightened me as a child, hearing how that scar came into being. I would study that face and remembering the stories I had been told, tried to imagine what he might have felt going through that experience and living.

It was a long trek up into the mountains and my father had tried to prepare me for the difference in the air, the thinness of what would go into my lungs. He spoke about the quiet. I tried to grasp the fullness of what he told me yet I was not prepared for the intensity of the quiet. No radio, no phone calls, no sound of cars passing by, just the wind, the sounds of those whose land we had invaded, and the sound of myself just breathing. Full of youthful energy, I could not take in the enormity of this adventure in just one trip. It would be followed by many trips; each year, filled with more wonderment than the one before.

Each day was filled with tasks that if not completed, would work a hardship on both my father and myself. My face burned from the stinging northern winds, the snow blowing felt like tiny BB's hitting me. Hands became weathered in short time and I matured in ways I wish all boys could. A great responsibility was on a young boy's shoulders. We cut wood for the fire, set traps, checked existing traps, fished for our dinner, secured the cabin against predators or intruders. When the snow blew in high and hard, it meant time spent inside for days but provided fresh water to drink when melted over the fire.

I left on that first trip, a young boy full of himself. The hard work built muscles in my arms and chest and I saw myself develop that one winter from a young boy, into a youth of substance. I learned responsibility the hard way. One time not doing what was asked of me caused us to go without food for two days and nights. Dad said nothing and the quietness of that could be felt down so deep inside of me, I thought I might die.

It amazes me still of what God provides through nature to sustain us physically, spiritually and mentally. The fast pace lives we live cheat us of so much. That cold air blowing in from the high country is my call to take my son on the adventure of his life to the old trapper's cabin built so many years ago. My hope is that my son will gain from his experience enough to build in him the knowledge of how to exist in the quiet, how to allow God to provide when things look bleak and to give him the confidence in himself to know he can be successful in anything he chooses to do. I also hope he continues our tradition of going home to the “Old Trapper's Cabin” when he hears the call of cold High Country air whispering in his ear.

Written to go with my pencil drawing of “Old Trapper's Cabin”.

I may have posted the drawing earlier in the thread. If so, I apologize for repeating it but thought of it as we are sharing about snow. I love snow. It covers the earth in the purity of white and covers the darkness of winter with light.
