The fact that she had a normal period 3 days later pretty much proves she's not pregnant.
This is actually incorrect as it takes 3-5 days for the sperm to reach the egg, then 3-5 days longer for the egg to travel to the uterus where it implants.

Oops, I didn't know it took that long (I was thinking it took 1-2 days for the sperm to reach the egg). Can the egg implant inside the uterus during your period? Since she'd most likely still be on her period during that phase. I wouldn't think it could implant since the uterus is shedding?

Double oops - “It’s a common misconception that if a woman has sex during her period she cannot become pregnant. While a woman is unlikely to get pregnant during her period, it is absolutely possible.” Can a Woman Become Pregnant During Her Period?

I know a woman can get pregnant if she has sex during her period, but I've always read it's because she ovulated shortly after.
I just looked up "can women ovulate during their period" (because I wasn't sure) and the answer is yes but it sounds like only when she has irregular periods. And he said her period was normal. Plus they fooled around 3 days before her period!

Ovulation Frequently Asked Questions - American Pregnancy Association

    Quote from that site:

"Can I ovulate during my period?

For women who have regular cycles, ovulating during your period is highly unlikely. Some women have very irregular cycles, maybe coming once every 3 months or 2-3 times in one month, and these women can have the odd occurrence of ovulating during a period or what is believed to be a period. Still, the chance of ovulating during a period is unlikely. But because sperm can live in the body for 3-5 days, pregnancy could occur from intercourse that takes place during a period."

Your source appears to say one thing, mine says another. J9 is the expert - and knows her stuff.

Hopefully she'll come along and pick option #1 or option #2.

Would I take the chance that you are right? No.

It would seem that, if you read them thoroughly, they're saying about the same thing. It is just colouring that seems to be different. You can ovulate during your period. You can ovulate just after your period. The defining times seem to be from ovulation to the start of the period. The period length and the time from your period to ovulation is fluid, no pun intended.

Right now it is a matter of probabilities. The chances of his sperm being in the right place at the right time. What affects this probability is when they fooled around. When she ovulates/how regular and long her cycle is. How much sperm might have gotten into her.

Considering that, based upon what he said, she probably ovulated a week before they messed around, then she had a period. So the chances are EXTREMELY low. They're there, but you would have better chance of getting attacked by a tiger.
