Think of prostitution as an occupation.

If you were a surgeon doing open heart surgery, would you not protect yourself with gloves? If you drove a truck for a living, would you never use a seat-belt? Of course not.

As an occupation, prostitutes have to protect themselves, and they do not know if a customer has a disease. Nor do they wish to risk pregnancy while working.

If I were a prostitute, knowing the risks of unprotected sex and unwanted pregnancy, I would make sure I reduced the risk as much as possible. There are many ways to do that, and to not protect yourself is taking unnecessary risk.

Unless you live in a third world country or see a crack ho most prostitutes will use protection... not just because of pregnancy.. thats easy to take care of with the pill... but for AIDS and other STD's.

Well prostitutes do not necessarily 'derive pleasure' from their occupation. And the johns, (the males) have to accept the fact that they have to wear condoms. It is a rule of the trade. Now in your case, have you tried lambskin condoms? They are supposedly closer to the real thing. Pulling out is an in-effective method of birth control, as pre ejaculate can contain sperm, and/or control of emission might be off. I agree with ARTLADY and recommend visiting a doctor to see if he/she can give you other alternatives for birth control. If you are both disease free and monogamous, then look at the pill. Otherwise, try lambskin condoms, or condoms combined with a warming sexual lubricant. (I.E. K-Y warming gel), to see if that will help.

This might not apply here but I am mentioning it only because its not common knowledge...

But lambskin condoms do not provide a barrier to STD's.

Wow! This I did not know...

I am wondering then, what would be a good latex free way to prevent STD's? I know of one person who found out this way that she had a latex allergy :rolleyes:

So does waiting to have sex until you KNOW you both don't have STDs.

I'd also like to point out (having known a few prostitutes) that condoms are NOT necessarily a "must" for prostitutes. Many men pay more to ride "bareback"--and it's a significant amount more, and since it really IS about the money, many prostitutes are willing to accommodate them.

Non-latex condoms are only slightly less effective than latex. Both provide protection from STD's.

True... those are not Natural skin condoms but a better alternative for those with a latex sensitivity but still need the STD barrier as well (like people who are not married and monogomous). Something the natural skin condoms don't provide.

I new a couple too (not biblically) but they were high priced call girls. None would take that risk. THey did mention a few did ask, and they were promptly told to look elsewhere if that's what they want... they intend to live to a ripe old age.

If that extra $50-$100 will pay for more food, or a doctor's visit for a kid, or get the electricity turned back on---well, weigh starving against a CHANCE for an STD.

I agree--it is Russian Roulette. But I don't know many (if any!) girls that get into prostitution out of anything but desperation in the first place.

Oh the couple women I knew were in the $450+ per hour Call girl league... not in that streetwalker group at all. THey really look down on that group, Money doesn't buy anything you want, Money they have... thats chump change for them... and they have fat bank accounts too, they don't NEED to do anything seriously risky (beyond the risk they already take that is.). I know one that permanently retired from the business after 5 years with about $1.5 million in the bank... and no vices (as in drug use, etc). And no high cost lifestyles.

Oh, It was for money... but none of these were out of desperation.

Odd that I ever knew any of them because I have never paid for it (outside of dinner, etc. when I was dating). Well I knew one that went into the business after I knew her for a while ( she wasn't when I first met her) and she introduced me to a few of her friends along the way. I was sort of a friend they knew, they never saw me as or treated me like a client, or a threat. Enough that I knew their real names, in a couple cases their family, and even where a couple really lived as opposed to worked.

- barrier methods that prevent sperm from reaching an egg (condoms, female condoms, cervical cap, diaphragm)

- surgical methods intended to be permanent (female or male sterilization)

- withdrawal method (pulling out)

- use of chemicals that kill sperm (spermicide sponge, spermicide used with cervical cap, gels, suppositories, etc)

You need to educate yourself and decide what is right for you. We will not do that here. We do not know what is available for you, we don't know where you are and whether you have access to all of these. Some can use hormones or spermacides and some cannot. Availability in different countries and cultures is something we cannot predict.

No matter what you choose, you should at least learn about methods of tracking your cycle and use this in addition to one, if not two, other methods. Each couple needs to find what works for them. Condom use is one of the most popular because it protects against std's in addition to reducing pregnancy. Couples that "double up"... using condoms and another method, like IUD or the pill, greatly reduce their risk.

All that said, my son was conceived while tracking my wife's cycle and using protection. No method or combination of methods is perfect, outside of abstinence.

So... its your turn to read the information provided, then find out what you have available and make informed choices.

I have an aunt who practiced that with a guy she had a fling with and she ended up with getting pregnant, so its not particularly safe, no.

I agree... unless you want kids you have to assume you can get pregnant any time you have sex. Because even during your period its possible.

If you think condoms work 100% of the time then you're dreaming. No form of birth control works 100% of the time, the only sure way not to get pregnant is not to have sex.

Also, you do realize that pretty woman is a movie, it's not reality, not even close.

Is is possible for to get an injection of a female contraceptive called 'depo'. Ask your doctor about it. This lasts for three months and doesn't cost much. It does NOT however stop STD's so unless it is your life partner take precautions.

It's also not 100% effective, I can't stress that enough.

Everyone, there are safer sex methods out there but there's no such thing as "safe sex". Anytime you have sex, no matter how many forms of birth control you use, there's always the possibility of pregnancy and STD's.

So, if you're having sex you may suffer the consequences, no matter how careful you are.
