Try way back even further... its well documented back during the Roman empire it was popular, and may go back as far as the Egyptian Empire. So its not a new thing. Its been around as long as mankind had the means to do so.

Trimmed and well kept would be a good idea, the last thing anybody wants is a mouth full of pubic hair.
