I quit reading this when in the 1st paragraph Rmuse made the premise that the there is " tea party rage at an African American in the Oval Office ".
No point in reading the rest because Rmuse(whoever that is ) is an a$$hole .

The Dems failed the entire state of Michigan for decades . Now you think the steps being taken are draconian ;but they are indeed very necessary . If you are looking for blame then look in the Democrat mirror because Detroit ,Michigan Kalifornia are the logical outcomes of Democrat nanny state socialist polices.

Meanwhile NY DEC is working on regulations that will permit fracking in our expansive Marcellus and Utica fields . I can't wait . Upstate NY has been in a state of Democrat induced depression for many years .

Yes it is so unnecessary... Too bad no one has invented a tubular object that spans thousands of miles through which petroleum can be simply pumped... oh wait ,they have .

But the Dems will oppose it because they are in bed with THEIR corporate cronies like Warren Buffett who think it's much better to use mid-19th century technology to transport fuel .

I can't work out whether you are for or against pipelines or is it you just don't want them subsidised? I would have thought that the accident in Canada finished the debate. Public safety wins, but then again if you aren't interested in public safety where guns are concerned what's a little oil between friends?

Pipelines are infrastructure ;are a necessary alternative to transport by truck or train . I don't know what you mean by "subsidized " .That is irrelevant . They travel through both private and public lands so the government has to be involved . I am a fan of user fees paying for bonds issued to finance them. Where they travel though private lands ,fair compensation should be given to the land owner.
But they are so superior over the alternatives there is no debate . Waste and other products are on the railways and trucks going through the center of every town. Pipelines are usually taken through the rural areas and can have "sufficient set back" that ensures public safety.

And it's (again not unexpectedly) come to this...

Wal-Mart Canceling Plans for Three D.C. Stores Over 'Living Wage' Bill

Wal-Mart is pulling out of two, possibly three, D.C. sites where it planned to build stores, citing the D.C. Council's impending adoption of a bill mandating large retailers pay a "living wage" to employees. The bill, which passed the on its first vote last month, will be put to a final tally Wednesday during the Council's final meeting of the current legislative session.

Representatives from Wal-Mart say the company will no longer build its planned stores at Skyland Town Center and Capitol Gateway, retail sites in Ward 7. "They're not bluffing me," Councilmember Yvette Alexander (D-Ward 7) says, having just left a meeting with the world's largest retailer. "We worked for many years to get this commitment. I really didn't think it would get to this point."

The Large Retailer Accountability Act requires companies that take in at least $1 billion in revenue annually to pay their employees at least $12.50 an hour, well above the District's minimum wage of $8.25. The bill also only applies to stores that are at least 75,000 square feet, thus exempting companies like Apple and Starbucks.

In addition to the two Ward 7 stores, Alexander's chief of staff, Ed Fisher, also says Wal-Mart's move imperils a store planned for New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road NE. Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie (D-Ward 5), who represents that area, was one of eight "yes" votes on the bill's first reading.

"That was without knowing Wal-Mart was going to pull out," says Jeannette Mobley, McDuffie's chief of staff. Mobley says her boss is "going to give this some thought" before tomorrow's Council session.

Fisher says each planned Walmart was going to have at least 300 full- and part-time employees, as well as enhance food shopping options in Ward 7, where there are only four full-service supermarkets. "We're going to have fewer options for groceries and commercial retail," Fisher says. "At least 900 people won't have an opportuntiy whether it's full-time or part-time. Whether it's a student in high school or a senior or a job someone can use as a stepping stone."
So, leftie favorites like Apple and Starbucks get a pass on the "living wage" law while the evil giant does not. Instead of 900 people making minimum wage they get 900 people without jobs who can buy iPhones and mochas instead of reasonably priced food and other necessities. Liberal logic at its best.

Pretty sure those establishments are full of rightys too. Usually rightys can't figure out an Android so they go to iPhone, and they buy an overprices Starbucks coffee to drink in their Hummer because they can.

BTW how do you leave 900 people without jobs related to stores that haven't been built yet? The article clearly states they were "opportunities".

Ok. I love Starbucks coffee, we grind up some Sumatra, Italian roast or some other bold beans almost every day. I've tried all manner of roasts including some locals but I keep coming back to theirs. But the product has little to do with why Apple and Starbucks are leftie favorites while Walmart is the scourge of the earth to them (even though Starbucks proudly sells their coffee in Walmart).

Do you take everything so literal? What a bore. It was 900 new jobs, what do you not get about that?

THis is local to me... there is a lot more to this that never makes it into the story.

DC wastes money on absolutely stupid things... MOST of the councel have been under investigation for one thing or other... several have been jailed.

Meanwhile they are famous for corruption that makes Nancy Pelosi look like a saint. I believe only Chicago as a city is more corrupt.

And they are back with the Lets screw it to the successful businesses... by setting up two classes of rules... one to punish the successful and another for the rest.

I rarely shop at Walmart... but I am 100% behind them telling the blohards in the DC councel to get stuffed.

Because the stuff they try to pull around here... and frequently do and get away with would fill volumes.

There are really good reasons so many businesses avoid DC like the plague. Most just don't even make plans to begin with... I've been watching one property that has been on hold for over 6 months in the middle of renovations because of the red tape... meanwhile the people TRYING to open that buiness are having to pay rent... and we are talking nearly $30,000 a month... while nothing gets done... renovations are maybe 20% commplete and the city is holding things up... I've watched another nearby where they have kept renovations from being completed for the last several years.

And this is near Georgetown... not Anacostia. The high rent district where the money is.

Except they carve out exceptions for some of the successful as I noted before.

IN DC starting salary is about $9.00 at Starbucks and around $10 at Apple stores as best I can tell.

So, what's better, $8.50 per hour or nothing per hour?
