    Do you mean the dollar amount withheld from your paycheck? It's by income.

    Irrespective of the state you work in, you earned income is subject to social security tax at 6.2% and Medicare tax at 1.4%. Your income is also subject to federal income tax and also state tax. Some states also have other taxes like state disability insurance.

    On your federal tax return as married filing jointly, your standard deduction is $10,500 (for 2007) and exemptions are $6800 (for 2007).
