Sorry if the question is compicated I don't know what they call it when the idians get paid.
Has anyone done your family tree?
No and I don't know how much indian I have in me but supposivly you can get paid if you're an indian.
Sorry but that is an old myth, There is no money for just being indian or even part Indian. Most will tell you that even living on an Indian reservation you are living below the poverty level
You trace your family tree back to where you find the person with Indian and follow them back till it is full.
If one of your parents were you would be 1/2 if one of your grandparents were, you were 1/4 if one of your great grandparents are you are 1/8 and so on
No you don't get paid if you are of native American descent. There may be some tax breaks if you are a member of a recognized tribe.
Specific tribes will have requirements to become registered for that tribe. And there is no "money" for being Indian. Some tribes have payments for members living on their lands, Homes and other things,
Most will require you to be at least 1/4 to be reconised. But you need to contact your specific tribe. My older boys mom was 1/8 but she could not get on any approved lists. ( we tried) due to some areas such as scholarships and we were living at a reservation at the time also.
I'll answer this question because not only am I indian and I know but a lot of people are mis informed.
I am 25% Ojibwa and Iriqous my Indian Ancestry goes back with the Dubay family. I live in Michigan where the Ojibwa (Chippewa) reigned for a majority of their tribal existence. All Tribal owned Casinos in the state of Michigan are Chippewa owned and they do pay Tribal Individuals IF the following circumstances are met.
A) At least 25% Chippewa
B) Your family is registered. Registry includes X amount of years showing tribal bloodline.
C) Family Tree is submitted and approved.
Only federally recognized tribes have access to the Native American Trust Fund. This trust fund was for the sake that their land was "stolen". This was given to the tribes and are not governed by the government.
The biggest thing people don't understand is that the Government doesn't pay you. The tribe does. Through an initial fund started by the government. When the tribe gets their capital check they split it so everyone gets X amount.
Hope this helps.
Rick
P.S. It is true, if you would have just googled it you could have found out the answer just as quick.
Thanks for the clarification Rick, but I still don't believe my answer was factually incorrect. Even given your response, I think it's a misnomer to say that someone gets "paid" for being a native American. Instead its more correct to say that registered members of a recognized tribe SHARE in a fund that is recompense for the taking of their lands. In addition tribes that run casinos or other income producing enterprises also share their profits with registered members. But this is all sharing the tribe's revenue, I wouldn't call it being "paid".
I understand completely and I shouldn't have reddie'd your or the other poster.
In all honesty though we are "paid" for being Native American. Granted there are steps to take but it's something I should have just wrote and not disagreed.
I apologize
Rick
As for me, apology accepted.
Not a problem on my side either. I can appreciate the sensitivity the issue may have caused. And I could have expanded more on my answer to make it clearer.
