    Handrail-what side?
Getting ready to install a new handrail and I don't remember on which side the original was. I took it down some time ago as part of ongoing remodeling. The house is a mid 60's bilevel with five stairs to the upper level, so there is a wall on both sides of the stairs. I noted the mounting screw holes in the framing, but when my dad was ill I installed another railing on the other side, so there are holes on both sides and I can't recall the original.

I'm wondering if there is any “standard” practice of placing the rail. My research didn't revel anything. My thinking would be to have it on the right side, when going DOWN the stairs, as most people are right handed. The layout of the hallway would obviouly limit placement. Or….is it strictly a matter of preference?

Placing it on the right hand side would hamper your sword arm when defending your homestead against the undead.

Apart from that your conclusions seems sound to me. Rails are normally placed on the outside if there is any turn in the stairs, otherwise I think it's a matter of preference.
Having it on the user's stronger side for descending to prevent falls makes sense.

Most are placed opposite the lock side. Depending on the door placement, it keeps the handrail away from the lock area. However, it's your choice.

Thnaks for the info- kind of figured it was either or... There is no door so the lock side is not an issue, but good to know for future reference.
