    Allergic to fruit
My children get severe diarreaha when they eat fruit they also get a painful, bloody, blistery rash on their bottoms and around their mouths. Everyone in my husbands family thinks that I am making it up and give them fruit behind my back.. what they don't see is that when I am with them they get the reaction. I tell them about it and tell them to stop but they don't think they are doing anything wrong. In fact the other day the straight up told me there is no such allergy and that it was my cooking. I need some advise... Am I a bad parent for not allowing them to eat something that causes such bad reactions? Should I just aquiese in their requests for me to just allow them to eat fruit? I am the one that has to deal with the aftermath of it. Grrrr it upsets me that they do this.

You can have an allergy to anything. I too am allergic to fruit. Watermelon can about kill me, it closes up my throat and I can't breathe. I also get sores in my mouth and my tongue swells... it isn't fun and my son is the same. I'd be ticked if someone gave him something he was allergic to. As long as they are getting the proper nutrients without the fruit, it would make you a bad parent to give them something they are allergic to.

You need to tell your family that if they wish to see YOUR children, they need to abide by YOUR rules. These are not their children. Tell them they have bad reactions when given fruit, and you would prefer it if they don't have it. If they refuse to listen, tell them that they are no longer to be unsupervised with your children because they are unwilling to follow your wishes. I had this problem with my MIL and my son. He has bad reactions to milk, and I keep him on soy, and she had this fancy idea that it was just me being weird and would give it to him without my knowledge. He would get sick, and I knew exactly what happened. I finally sat her down and told her that if she tried it again, I would not let her visit with my child, she is causing him discomfort. A lot of children are sensitive to fruit. It may not be allergies necessarily, but it isn't a fallacy either. Good luck.

I have to agree with everyone here. You can be allergic to ANYTHING! I even knew a girl who was allergic to her own hair.

Now, probably what is happening is that they are allergic or sensitive to the acids in the fruits. The rash around the mouth is exactly what told me this. This rash is very common in people allergic to fruits.

You need to sit down with the family members and explain this to them, if you have before, do with the others said above. Schedule their vsitations with the children so that they are supervised by you, is another alternative.

But by all means, don't let them have fruit if it does bother them in this way. You also don't mention their ages, this could be a factor also.

And, don't let anyone tell you that they will get scurvy if they don't get their fruits. This is a complete falshood this day in age.

Have you had your children tested? Maybe if there were conclusive test results for your children's reactions to fruit, your family would back off, or wake up, or just plain abide by what you have been telling them. I am allergic to peach skin and apricot skin but not the peach or apricot. EVen after washing the fruit, I still get a reaction.

You are NOT a bad parent for not allowing your children to eat something that causes such a reaction. There may come the time your children eat that fruit and have a severe, life threatening reaction. Then what? You are doing the right thing here. I certainly hope your family cooperates or else I would tell them they are not welcome, until they can follow your rules.

I am allergic to caterpillars! Being near them brings me out in hives! You can be allergic to anything. Your husbands family need to be told sraight that if they continue to cause your children harm you will supervise any visits they have with them. If they still do it I would speak to a lawyer, giving somehting that you know will hurt a child is child abuse in my eyes. Its awful, why would they want to do that?

Sorry I forgot to mention ages my son is four and my daughter is two. I also forgot to mention that my father in law is a obgyn and my mother in law is a nurse ansthesist. I also found out that my husband has given them fruit behind my back as well. I know that he did last night as my son had a reaction. I am angry at them. Oh yes we live in VA and they live in Texas. We see them twice a year but I am thinking that maybe I should cut that down to once per year and only for a week. I cannot take the constant berating and belittling and going behind my back to give the children fruit. My kids get a vitamin supp and they eat veggies. This is driving me crazy. Thank you all for your advise.
