The septic/vent pipe combo
Hi Speedball,
Yes, the vent pipe is part of the septic out pipe as far as I can tell.
If I stand outside the building, I am right outside of the bathroom.
There is a round (8" diameter) plastic clean-out looking contraption and coming out of the top of it is a piece of pvc pipe that curves toward the outside of the building and then attaches to the outside wall with brackets. The pipe ends about 2 feet above the roof line.
We've been back at our country place for a month now so we think we've got about 2 more weeks before the septic starts smelling (as it has in the past).
Thanks,
Karen
Adding a running trap to our septic line
Hi Tom,
We had a builder friend come over and look at our strange venting/exhaust situation for our septic system. We had already dug out a trench that exposed part of the out pipe from the building. The pipe is 4 inch diameter PVC. Our friend, Warren, said that there are no 4" traps but that he could help us make a trap by using several 4" elbows. Does this sound like a reasonable idea to you?
Now here is another Plumbing 101 question for you.
Our building has a concrete slab floor. In the bathroom, there was a hole in the slab for the toilet (and PVC pipe in place). The local handyman who installed all of our plumbing and electric is the person who hooked up the vent/exhaust pipe outside of the bathroom window. Now we are thinking that he had to do it that way because he didn't have a choice. Our question is: when a toilet is installed, where is the vent pipe attached? Is there some kind of T connector under the floor? Did we need to have 2 holes in the concrete slab? The concrete guys, who poured a beautiful slab, accidentally forgot to put in the drain pipe for the bathtub so now we have a tub that drains outside - straight through the wall into the yard. This is fine, ultimately, but it's just one of those crazy things that happens during construction, as you are aware!
Thanks for your advice.
Karen
