    Single or Multistage Heating Systems
How can I tell if I have a single or multi stage heating and cooling system or if I have a heat pump with auxiliary heat? I have two thermostats ( upstairs and downstairs) and two heat pumps. I want to install new programmable thermostats but don't know if I bought the right one.

What wires are connected on the old stat with colors?
Old stat model #? Link to instructions would be perfect.

Does your outdoor unit(s) run during heating cycles? If so, you have heat pumps. Do your existing thermostats have a selection for "emergency heat"? What utilities are connected to your system(s), electric only, natural gas/LP, fuel oil? What terminals are currently being used by your existing thermostat(s)?

My heat pumps are American Standard Heritage 11's. I looked on-line but couldn't find the instruction manual or specs on them. There are Green, Blue, Orange, Yellow, White, Red, Brown, and Black wires coming out of the wall. The brown and black wires are not hooked up on the old American Standard Thermostats. There is a switch for Emergency Heating on the thermostat. The system runs on electricity only and it is central heating/air. We have no base boards. I couldn't find the model # but here are the #'s on the back of the stat - T8411R 1101, ASYSTAT 570. My Heat pumps are American Standard Heritage 11's - Model # 6H1024A100A5 Serial # 20310DS4F. I bought the Honeywell RTH6300B 5-2 Day thermostat. Thanks for your help.

Here is your old Stat part number ( T8411R) wiring and info.

I hope you left your old thermostat wiring hooked up to the old thermostat or marked the wires from where they came from. Only use the wires that are hooked up now. Transpose the wiring from the old thermostat(wiring above) to the new thermostat. Usually it will be color for color but make sure.

NOTE your have 8 wires coming out of the wall less 2 that are not being used = 6 that are being used. Now read the instructions contained in the link below under DID you purchase the correct thermostat. Page 6

Looks to me like you might have a incorrect thermostat but since I have no idea where your wires are connected and what they do on the old thermostat it is a toss up since they do not count the c or c1 wire.

I have the same Heat Pump model number, and the same question! Is this a single stage or two stage heat pump? Did you ever get a straight answer?

    hi
T8411R is a multi stage heatpump stat,I think the wires were connected to C,G,Y^W,O,R,W2 but if u have not labelled the wires then don't assume ,trace the wires from the air handler
    RTH6300B is a wrong stat
    u need to get RTH6350D or RTH7500
    in RTH7500D u can use C wire but in RTH6350D u cannot
    also RTH7500D is a 7 day prog.
