You have a blockage downstream from the tub that must be snaked. This clog can be reached in one of two ways.
    1) By 56the lavatory roof vent. Put out enough snake to reach the base and 18 feet more. **OR**
    2) Remove the tub waste and overflow and snake from the overflow, (see image) good luck, Tom

Thanks, tom... we tried 2 bottles of liquid fire drain cleaner to no avail, so this is the next logical option... thanks for taking the time to read and reply... will let you know how it turns out... as you can imagine, after spending 2 weeks prepping the place, painting, cleaning, etc, this is quite a let down and took away from the excitement of having our own place with no payments, as we paid for it outright, which was a huge moment in itself... thanks again! mzmustaine1960.

If you added drain cleaner you should fill the tub and let it drain even if it takes an nour. You do not want to rod a drain that might have standing drain cleaner in it

In addition to Toms advice, you can also pull the toilet and snake from there, or look for a house cleanout and see if there is water backing up there, if there is, you can snake from there. I would skip snaking from the tub overflow, as you can not get a big enough snake down there to clear a toilet sized drain properly(blockage is in a three or four inch drain). Good luck and let us know how things work out.
