    Replacing a Bent Flange
Hi, we are completely remodeling our bathroom and are almost to the steps of installing the new toilet. When we test fit it to make sure there would be enough space between it and the vanity, the toilet rocked pretty badly. We did not have a wax ring underneath when we test fit it, but upon closer inspection, we realized that the flange was bent (or buckled) upwards, possibly from the bolt being tightened too hard when it was installed. This is the original toilet and it probably has never been taken out before. Here is our problem. I believe that the flange is PVC and is somehow attached to the black PVC soil pipe. We don't know how to take the old flange off and replace it with a new one. Most of everything that I have read online has been about repairing a broken metal flange with a repair kit. It is not broken, just buckled. We would like to replace it but are not sure how and with what. Could you shed some light on this process for us? Thank you in advance!

    Hi Jennifer,

I need to know the pipe size the flange sets on before I can help. It will be either 3 or 4 inches. You don't change a plastic flange. You have to cut it out below where it was glued and then hope you can find a deep flange to replace it. Failing that you will have to cut the raiser back and using a coupling extend it up to floor level. I might be able to get you by this with a inside4 replacement flange or give you directions on how to do away with the flange entirely. You have options but I need details to give them to you. Regards, Tom

    3 Attachment(s)
    Tom,
The flange is actually attached to 3" Black ABS, not PVC (my mistake). My husband just took another look at it and it didn't appear to be one piece. So he took pliers and snapped it off. We are just not sure whether it was supposed to be glued to something underneath and that part broke, or if that was the whole thing. I am attaching photos to make it easier for you to see what I am talking about.

Just shave off the raised portion of the old ABS flange and slip the repair flange underneath. Good luck, Tom

Thank you very much! My husband suspected that was what he needed, but wasn't sure. Lowe's didn't carry it, so I guess we'll check out a plumbing store. Thanks again for all your help!
