Gurgling toilet & smell when washing machine in use
The powder room is next to our washing machine/ utility room and when we run the washing machine the toilet gurgles and the washing machine room smells foul. The toilet and washing machine share the same drain. Our house was built in 2004. We would appreciate some guidance on how to fix this foul problem. Thank you.

Something is lodged in the drain pipe and you need to "snake" it free. They have tapes available at Home Depot or Lowe's that get to the problem area. Or Ask A Handyman on the Internet.

City sewer or a septic tank?
What's happening here is that when the washer pump puts out a powerful stream it hits a partial clog downstream from your toilet and bounces back sending a bubble of sewer gas ahead of it and that's what you hear and smell coming from the toilet. The solution would be to snake the drain line from the washer stand pipe, the washer roof vent or the lavatory roof vent. If you snake from the roof put out enough cable to reach the base and 20 feet more. Good luck, Tom

Hey NO_NAME, you say "Or Ask A Handyman on the Internet" What do you think we are, chopped liver? Just kidding but this is what we do here. The guy just before me, Speedball is a plumber, I'm a handyman of sorts. Hungies should just follow Tom's advice. Do not listen to Sexyblackgirlnca either, "buts thats only if you have a septic tank" don't know where she got this idea from.
