Can mold or mildew grow inside faucets?

My faucet has black stuff (maybe mold) on it . I unscrew the tip and the screen has
Black stuff (mold) too. Could this be growing inside the faucet or pipes?

Smell the screen. Does it smell moldy? Is the black stuff hard or soft? Could it be plastic? Let me know, Tom
