    Newton's 3 rd law is about equal and opposite reactions. I guess a squid sucks in the water then expels it quickly (however squids do this) When expelled the water exerts and equal force against the squid and the water. This pushes the squid through the water..

    If you have ever tried to step onto the shore from a small boat then you will have first hand experience of this.. In order to not end up in the water the boat needs to be secured to the shore.
