    Hi shorst27

    Depending on the set you have=

    s=2 p=3

    s=3 p=4

    The salt always has less than pepper

    I'm sorry to disagree... but the salt goes in the shaker with more holes. This dates back to a time when pepper was much more expensive than salt.

    Hi JJ

    Well then I have been doing it wrong for 50 yrs and my mom before for I don't know how long.

    The holes in shakers that we have are all the same size, thereby making the salt come out faster.

    Most of the time we use a pepper mill so it makes no def here.

    It depends what shaker you buy!

    I've always used the salt in the shaker with more holes.

    The number of holes is different in each set, but, in my experience, salt always has more.

    Neither.

    Use a pepper mill and a salt mill and you will know what good seasoning is.

    Otherwise, you might as well be opening "stolen" extra salt/peppa' packets from mcd's and seasoning through torn paper tunnels of old seasoning with dried oils and no soul.

    There is NO universal standard.

    Do whatever you want.

    There are salt shakers with one hole, to allow the user to plate a pile of salt on a the plate, then use the fork to season each bite with the pile...

    There are people who use the crystal size argument. Those who use the cost argument. The guild of professional butlers who say salt needs fewer and bigger holes, as it is bigger and more dense... so the bigger hole allows flow, the fewer holes allow for more control over amount...

    And the honest truth is this...

    A salt and pepper shaker are manufactured items.

    There is no required standard for these manufactured items.

    So... whatever you buy... it does not need to conform to any "ideal"...

    We can argue all we want, but because there is no real standard of manufacture, there is no perfect answer.

    I first saw this question on this site three years ago. And the answers are all the same. All over the place, with no proof of any real standard.

    But when in doubt, ill go with HC's answer. I like to be on her sweet side. She's a cutie.

    I think salt goes in the least of holes would be for health sake. If my family had salt w the most holes, it would not be good.

    The old standard was that the salt was to have larger holes because of the salt's size. Also my Mother added uncooked rice to the salt to prevent the salt from clogging.
