Yes I know that there are salvation armys that train and employee the metally disabbled.

Yes, there are many, a lot of private firms with contracts with the state.

You need to talk to the county case worker who will guilde you to any in your area.

Yes, there are programs. Each state is likely to have different agencies, so you need to do some checking on that. The Vocational Rehabilitation Department would be a good place to start, also your state's Mental Health Association. Finding the particular agency in your area that works with people who have mental illness - there are those who specialize in working with people who have developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, and the list goes on.

Do you have a caseworker through your county? Or through your Human Service Center? Ask them - part of their job to help you find things like this out. How to go about getting a case manager... are you hooked with any services through your county social services or your regional human service center? Each regional service center has case mangers who work with persons with mental illness. If you do not have them where you live (but you should), call your Human Services Department and ask for the Mental Health Services Division.

Something I should have added and did not, because I assumed you had your doctor already refer you to a psychiatrist for the official diagnosis. The psychiatrist would be a good resource for the referral into the human services maze.

Are you still in school? If so is there a job counselor on site that can help?

Are there any residential or in house programs for the disabled in your area?

Just curious is this for you or someone you know? Why aren't you/someone you know connected to any sort of resource facility already? I think it totally sucks for you not to have a resource network already in place. There are all sorts of life skills classes and opportunities for the disabled - please let us know what you found on your search.

I work for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health. We have an application process, with the application available on our State website. I would suggest you browse your state's website.

I also have a mental illness (Bipolar Disorder) and have received help to get me employed. I was in contact with our state's Dept of Vocational Rehabilitation. They offer plenty of job training and educational opportunities. They paid my college tuition.

I would also suggest you talk with your doctor about applying for Social Security Disability Insurance, if you have worked in the past, or SSI, if you have no work history. They both let you spend money on training programs.

Also, I've found in Massachusetts that the One-Stop Career Centers, financed through the Federal Government and state unemployment people, are very helpful with training programs, and job hunting support. They have seminars on applying for jobs, resume writing, etc. I worked for one in MA in my "past life".

Try the department of rehabilitative services. In virginia, they have training programs at no cost to people.

You could also try goodwill industries-they have a training program as well.
