Legal aid for someone w/ no cash
Is there a way to file for a divorce w/ no money? I need to get out of this marriage before I end up in jail or homeless or both. He is wanting me to come to an agreement w/ no legal counsel because he doesn't want to pay an attorney, I think it has more to do with hidden assets that I am less likely to find w/o help from a knowledgeable person. I would like to file but have little or no cash to do so, or to retain an attorney. Are there services available for this, I am in phoenix, az.'Thank you, any and all suggestions appreciated...

There are probably agencies for abused spouses that you can contact for legal help. Also interview some attorneys. You may find one willing to take the case on contingency hoping to get your ex to pay your legal bills.

I have seen Attorneys represent a client with a very, very small retainer (the Attorney insists on some type of payment in order to prove an Attorney/client relationship) and then pursue the other spouse for full payment of legal fees, including that "down payment."

Would I make a deal without legal counsel - no way.

I should have added that in my area Legal Aid will NOT handle family law matters -

Judy not sure what part of NY you are at, but there are legal aid societies, some private non profit that will provide civil help. Here is one for part of NY

    LASNNY Home

But to the OP, if you are in danger, mentioned going to jail, if you are in danager, get out, there re women shelters and the such. And if you can't get the actual divorce right at this moment, don't, move out and worry about the actual divorce latter.

If both of you agree to all the terms of the divorce you can merely get the paper work off line and both sign and file.

Sorry - I wasn't clear enough. I was referring to County funded Legal Aid - it's a County-funded program. Due to cut backs they no longer handle Family Court matters.

Didn't mean other places that provide legal aid and I should have said that.

And I agree - if OP is in danger, move out. Worry about the rest of it later. And maybe the husband will sign -

Again, sorry I wasn't more clear.
