How much wire to buy for new construction
I am getting ready to wire my son's new home and was wondering how much wire to buy to start. The house is a 2000 sq. ft. ranch with a full basement and a 24' X 24' attached garage.

For example, should I buy a 1000' spool of 12/2 and 500' of 14/2? I realize I will have to buy some larger gauge for the range, dryer, etc.

I thank you in advance for your help!

I'm definitely no expert, but I rewired my kitchen and I probably used 250' cable in that room alone. My panel of course was at the opposite corner of the basement (35'), but I think 1500' of cable is going to go pretty quickly. Also, think about using 12 AWG only, the price isn't that much more, and then you can upgrade to 20 amp breakers if you find you need more power.

It has been a while, the last 2000 sq ft home I wired took about 2000 ft of #12-2, 500 ft of #12-3, 1500 ft of #14-2, and 1000 ft of #14-3, along with the range, dryer, water heater, and air conditioning cable, and telephone, and CATV.

Mind you this was a custom home, and was done much more than minimal code requirements.

Thanks for the information. Knowing I can come here and get helpful information makes the job that much less daunting.

    Thanks again!
