how much to feed miniature dachshund puppy
I have a miniature dachshund puppy who is about 10-1/2 weeks old named Muddy (chocolate& isabella dapple). We got her a couple of weeks ago, and have been feeding her 2x a day, about 1/4 c each time. My question is this - I recently read you should feed puppies more frequently, say three times per day. Is this necessary, and if so, should I add another 1/4 c feeding, or divde her current 1/2 c of food into three parts instead of two. She slways seems to be in search of more food when her food is gone, but she does not seem to be terribly thin. My husband does not think we are underfeeding her, but is there a way to be sure? I feel like she would eat an extra meal if it was offered, but I don't want to overfeed. Is there a sure way to tell how much is enough?

ASPCA: Dog Care jjflamingo go on this site 3rd paragraph down, It will tell you what the ASPCA recommends. Also they have some other good information. The bag should tell you the total amount to feed your puppy. If she really seems hungry maybe call your vet for additional suggestions. Btw muddy is a cute puppy name. :)

I have reliable guidelines for larger breeds, and they say 3 meals a day until 3 months. However, you will be there in a couple of weeks, and I wonder if it is worth it to switch, and then switch back. I will point out, however good my info is for large breeds, the 3 meals may be more important for a Mini Doxie. We have some Dachshund owners here, see what they say.

It is common for young puppies to always be hungry, even breeds that later may refuse to eat more than they need. It is no guide to how much or how often to feed a puppy. Being overweight is a big problem for Dachshunds vulnerable backs.

I have a 8 month old Dachshund and the vet recommended feeding him twice a day and working up from a 1/4 to 1/2 cup per feeding. Right now he's having the full 1/2 cup serving, twice per day. Obviously your puppy is still small, try increasing it a bit. Honestly, I've never go by the feeding charts, I think the serving is way too much for these little dogs.
Also, remember this breed "should" remain on the lean side.. they tend to have back problems associated with overweight issues.
