Most likely what you're going to want is an external hard drive enclosure. This will allow you to keep your entire old hard drive which will then connect to your new computer using a USB cable. Not only do you now have your old files... but you also have a secondary hard drive for large file storage or backups.

Removing your old hard drive from your lap top is usually done by flipping it over and unscrewing the panel.

Many choices are out there... but this is typically what you should look for...

I agree with Haunting helper. The easiest way is to buy a drive enclosure that your hard drive will fit into. This is assuming the hard drive is still good. So, either you pay for an enclosure or you pay for someone to transfer the files.

Of course if you had a good backup policy, you would have had copies of your files on an external drive or in the cloud. And you wouldn't have this issue.

Doesn't matter. Windows 8 uses the same file system. So if you connect it as described it should work.

Your new computer will not see that old drive as the primary, which keeps your new OS.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you... but by attaching your old hard drive you're not going to be running two different versions of Windows. Your new computer can simply read the file system from the old drive... allowing you to have access to all of your old files THROUGH the new OS.
