Teaching a 14 Month old to talk / say words
I have a 14 month old little girl who is my first child.
She is a very happy little girl but the only thing that is bothering me at the minute is that she doesn't want to talk. So far she will babble but not very often, say 'mama' and 'dada' and point at things.
She will only say mama and dada occasionally and then the only other definite word is 'ta' as in 'thank you'.

I feel like I am failing her as other babies seem to be saying much more than her.
I read to her everyday and I constantly point to pictures and objects and say the one descriptive work... eg 'dog' etc.

Does this sound normal for a 14 month old and what else can I do to encourage her to talk.

It's also worth me saying that she doesn't ever try and repeat what I say. She just points.

14 months is awfully early for intelligible speech. Give it another year. If she isn't talking then, then worry about it. Until then, enjoy the peace... because its fleeting.

Children develop at there own pace.

What your doing right now will encourage her, like reading and pointing and saying the word.

When she does point, ask her to repeat the word.

Getting a book on animals is great,I had one and made the animal sounds, then asked my daughter to repeat.

Example.. look at the cow, the cow says moo.

    What does the cow say?

Make a big show about the sounds.

She will talk when she's ready. Keep encouraging her and talking to her. She will start to "respond" eventually. It also makes a difference if she hears you having conversations with others because she can take cues from you and learn the flow of a conversation.

My son is 2 and suddenly has taken an interest in talking and it's almost like he went from 0 to 10 overnight! Just be patient and keep working with her. Narrate everything you do by pointing and showing her what certain objects are.

Don't worry about it as they all develop differently. Don't be too hard on yourself and your daughter. And the worst thing you can do to her is to compare her with other kids and labelling her. Don't rush her into learning. Just enjoy as they will grow so fast. TIme flies so fast so just let her enjoy being a toddler and enjoy being her mother. You are doing very well in reading and teaching her some words. Just be patient and CONSISTENT. DOn't stop because you think you are not doing any progress.
