    Relinquishing parental rights
I was wondering how lengthy the process for relinquishing your parental rights and if you still have to pay child support after wards... we live in Mississippi

In most places relinquishing parental right does not absolve one of financial responsibility.

Also relinquishing rights usually occurs if someone else is adopting the child.

As to the time frame, ask your local Family Court.

I don't think you have to pay child support, because if you relinquish your rights, the legally you are no longer the parent. Check with the family courts, but I'm pretty sure I'm right.

Child support will only be absolved if there is an adoption involved in most states.

The court system wants to be sure that the child is still provided for.

Ok, first you will not be able to relinqueish parental rights unless the other parent agrees. Normally they are the ones askng for it.

If you want to do it, just so you don't have to pay child suppot it don't work that way.

Normally when a step parent wants to adopt the child, they will ask you to give up your rights to the child.

The courts will look at many things,

Sorry, I think you guys are right. I didn't think that the parent had to pay anymore. I know my ex threatened me with that and said that if he relinquishes his right, he won't have to pay anything. He said he spoke with a lawyer. But I'm from NJ so the laws might be different.

We had someone's parental rights relinquished and it's not a very long process. The lawyer will file a petition in the courts and then there is a hearing where you make statements and then were received right afterwards from the clerk of court that his rights are Relinquished. You may still be obligated to pay support, that's up to the judge. We told the judge with didn't want any financial help from him.
