Why exactly do you need liquid nitrogen?

Most university science departments will have access to some, maybe someone at a university close to you will be able to help you

Thank you for posting your question to the Ask Me Help Desk.

Have you tried a local clinic or hospital?

If you can verify that you work with the school and will be using it for educational purposes, you may be able to obtain some there.

You will need a special container to transport it though such as a Dewar flask.
I have seen other containers used for storage of liquid notrogen too, but unless you are versed in the handling and care of it I would suggest purchasing a Dewar flask out of your budget.

While the liquid nitrogen itself is very inexpensive, the flasks are pricy. You should be able to consult a Flinn or Fisher Scientific catalog to purchase one. I would imagine your school has one of those laying around somewhere.

Nominal amounts of liq N "might" be obtained, as mentioned, from a local univ. when I worked in the chem dept of a local univ, we always had liq N available, as it was needed for cooling of the NMR instrument. If a local teacher had called requesting it, the dept might have obliged... maybe not, with liability issues. Handle it wrong and you have frozen skin.

Otherwise you might look in the phone book for local chemical/gas suppliers... as the tanks that were brought in periodically to keep the machine filled were supplied by a local company that handled liq N, liq He, and probably other compressed gases. A phone book and a few phone calls can go a long way... if the local univ won't give it who do they use to supply?. and as mentioned, getting a dewar flask to transport is a good idea.

It's not particularly dangerous if you know what you're doing.

My favorite thing is to dip your hand into it for a half second.
    Mmmm cooling.

Of course, if you don't know what you're doing, then don't dip your hand into it ;p
