    My 1992 honda accord
    I here the fuel pump when I turn the key on... but its been raining so I haven't had a chance to go further... but I don't smell gas when I try to start it over and over could it be the filter...

    90%+ of "crank but won't start situations" are electrical-related, not fuel. If this describes your situation, and the Check Engine Light comes on and goes off after two seconds when the ignition switch is turned to ON (Position II), then the Ignition Control Module (ICM) and coil may need to be replaced:

    This is a very common problem on Hondas of your generation.

    Bench testing these components is notoriously unreliable. I've seen too many ICMs that test okay that don't work at all. Same goes for coils. Bench testing can't simulate the heat and operating conditions well. Therefore, based on my experience, I recommend replacing ICMs and coils every 100,000 miles or 10 years, whichever comes first.

    If you still would like to bench test your ICM, many AutoZone and Advance Auto Parts stores will do it for free. If the test says the ICM is bad, it's real bad. However, if it says it's okay, it may or may not be. If you reinstall a used ICM, be sure to coat the back with a thin, even coat of silicone heat-transfer grease.

    Well today I got a chance to check for spark and its got plenty of spark I also changed the fuel filter... while the filter was off I turned the motor over to see if any gas would come out of the line from the tank and nothing came out but the fuel pump runs when you turn the switch on... I think the filter in the tank is either clogged or the pump isn't pumping enough pressure is this possible??

    Well my first ? Is can some one tell me how to add to a thred so I don't have to keep starting a new one... and 2nd I dropped the tank and pulled out the pump and stuck it in gas and tested it and it pumped like it was suppose to and when I put everything back together it ran for about 30 sec then shut off... if I turn the key on and off it will run then shut down can this be the pressure regulater or is the pump not pumping enough pressure?? :confused:

    Electrically, it sounds like the fuel system is working properly. Have you checked the fuel pressure, by attaching a fuel pressure gauge to service port on the fuel filter? This link should help:

    The fuel rail needs to be fully pressurized, before the injectors will work. Ensure that you have plenty of gas in the tank. Then, turn the ignition switch to ON, allowing the fuel pump to run for 2 seconds. During this interval, the fuel pump is pressurizing the fuel rail. Now, turn the ignition switch OFF. Repeat this process three more times.

    I don't have the tool to check the pressure is there another way or should I just replace the pressure regulater

    I'm still not convinced that you have a fuel problem. Many people run down this rabbit trail to no avail.

    Specifically, describe the symptoms you are experiencing.

    Well before the car wouldn't start unless I sprayed starting fluid into it now after I dropped the tank it will run for a few seconds then slowly die and won't restart unless I turn the key on and off a few times but then it shuts off after a few seconds

    What's your gut on the fuel pump itself? Good or bad? Strong or weak?

    Do you have more than a token amount of gas in the tank?

    My gut says the pump is weak but I'm not sure how the regulater works and the effect it has... also there is a little over 1/4 in the tank...

    Reluctantly, then, I say replace the fuel pump. I've never known a fuel regulator to go bad. How many miles are on your Accord?

    Part of me says the car stalls because the ICM is bad. You may have good spark but the ICM doesn't fire when the ECM wants it to. If I planned to keep the car, I would replace the ICM and coil. My experience is that they should be changed every 120,000 miles or 10 years, whichever comes first.

    Here's another thought. Have you checked the ignition switch for wear, pitting, or melting?

    A well-maintained Accord should go 300,000 miles. It's not wasted money to restore "like new" reliability and performance.
