About six weeks ago my daughter got her ears pierced. She was doing perfectly well with them and was taking care of them beautifully. She spent the weekend with her grandparents and now has a flat somewhat painful bump on the back of one of her ears. What is this and how can we fix it?

Sounds like an abcess. Does it have any discharge, when pressed ? Painful to touch. I would have it checked out.

I had them, and I had to go to the doctors straight away (overprotective mum, bless), an it was an absess, but can you get hold of any savlon spray? That's the best, and the doctor will tell you to use it too!

This is normal because I had one also.. This usually only happens after you have the ear pierced after your 15 years old. It is good to get the ears pierced at a younger age. Sounds wired but two doctors said that the younger the better. It is good to get kids ears pierced after they have had all of the shots... One doctor told me that he sees a lot of parents that want there newborns to have there ears pierced right away but he sais that it is best to wait until after they have had all of there shots and so about 1 year old is a good age to have children's ears pierced. This was about how old I had my ears pierced and everything was PERFECT and healed nicely. The older you are when you have your ears pierced the more time for healing. I had my second holes pierced on my lobe when I was about 14 and it healed great but I let it grow up and I had it done again at 19 years old and I had a bump also. This bump, I forget the name of it but it will eventually go away but it may come back.. When it is okay for her to take out the earring let her take it out and for a few days. When the earring is out for a few days the bump will go away but it may come back again once the earring is put back on. This bump on the back of the ear happens to 90% of people over the age of 15 that have there ear pierced. You can go to the doctor and they will give you something but it will only help temporarily and the bump may come back again once the earrings are put back on. Sometimes the bump will go away for good after awhile.. My bump went away for good and I don't have it anymore. So to answer your question wait until she had had the earring on for about 3 months and then remove the earring for a few days and the bump WILL go away... I cannot guarantee forever but it worked for me.. Continue to follow the aftercare. Wash hands with antibacterial soap before touching the ears and clean the ears with unscented dial anti-bacterial soap, do sea salt soaks and clean with the anticeptic. Never use peroxide, alcohol, or antibiotic ointment for newly pierced ears. IF SHE IS TOUCHING HER EARS TOO MUCH THIS CAN CAUSE THE BUMPS TOO, OR CLEANING THEM TOO MUCH. IT

Also tell your daughter not to touch the ears too much or turn the earrings too much either.. Some places recommend turning the ears 3 times a day. I think this is too much because it aggravates the piercing and can cause the bumps. I think this is what caused my bump. I think your daughters bump or bumps will go away on there on after the ear has healed. Has she removed the earring, don't do this either. Just leave the earrings in the ear and be gentle with cleaning and touching etc. I am sure she doesn't have an infection or she would know. I had puss, and natuaral drainage in mine and when I finally removed the backs my ears bled some etc but I did not have an infection. The backings that some places use are very hard to remove and quite painful as well when trying to remove them. My friends did not bleed at all but she had bumps also... I replaced my backings after two months because tugging at the ears is not good and painful and then I believe is when the bumps started up.

A lot of piercings, especially in the ear develop Keloids - which aren't painful, and aren't really irritated, it's completely normal and happens frequently. I have 2 (one on each of my industrial peircings) they don't go away, if this is what it is - but it shouldn't be a health hazard or anything like that. It's just a matter of how she got pierced, and the technique of the piercer him/herself.

This happened to me. 2months ago I had my ears done for the second time. They were fine but about 2weeks ago I left ear was really painfull and I a small lump on it. I cleaned took care of them and tried not to play with it too much. However, last week I scratched it and a lot of puss come out. Then I started bleeding slightly but now its absolutely fine. It no longer hurts and the lump has gone.

I read this article that says it MIGHT be an enlarged lymp node which means there are extra white blood cells stored to fight infection. Not playing with it (the piercing) might help...

Bumps like this are usually caused by excessive irritation. Causes for the irritation can include overcleaning, overusing salt soaks/saline solutions, playing with the jewelry, changing the jewelry too often or too early -- even sleeping on them will cause irritation. Sleeping on them puts pressure on them that they sometimes cannot handle.

To help soothe and get rid of the bump, you can use a warm compress on it for 10 minutes twice a day. You also need to care for the piercing properly. Clean no more than once a day with antibacterial soap. Overcleaning is very bad. Don't play with it; don't even touch it if it is necessary.

If cared for properly, piercings should not give any trouble.
