    Help with software download
My question is regarding a new MacBook. I am new to Mac. I am trying to use the laptop to do home video's. I have a Sony Handycam and have inserted the install disk but it won't install because there is an error in that there in not installation/application to read the disk.. The disk says it should work for Mac OS but I'm confused about how to get the software recognized on my computer... Thanks.. Don't know if this is a Sony question or a Mac question as I have never done any video editing on PC or Mac.. No experience at all. Thanks

Are you sure the disc contains any Mac applications?

BTW, your camera should be instantly recognized by the system without the use of extra drivers or third party applications.

Have you tried just plugging the HandyCam into the computer to see what happens?

iPhoto or Image Grabber should automatically launch when the camera is plugged in.

You should also see a new disc icon appear on the desktop when the camera is plugged in.

Thanks, originally I thought I could just plug the camera in but when it wasn't being recognized or even noticed by the computer I thought I must need the software so I went that route.. Maybe I have a bad cable connection...

I work on a technical helpdesk supporting both macs and PCs. This issue has come up before.

A lot of drivers which come on CDs which contain MAC versions are not compatible with the new macbooks, due to not being updated for the Tiger release or simply not compatible with the intel macs.

The only solution we are able to give our customers is to visit the sony website and search for the latest drivers to install. If these drivers are not available, you will need to contact Sony for assistance. This is not an apple issue. Apple can only put auto detected drivers on their macbooks and others if the drivers are available.

The times I have given this advice to customers I have never had them come back to me or my team for further assistance. This is hopefully because the advice worked, but could be just because they gave up. I don't know which, but look luck :)
