    Cough Medicine/Sleeping Aid
I have much trouble falling asleep, I usually get to sleep around 2/3am and get up at 7am, and its not because I watch TV (Dont have TV anymore) or play computer too much, sometimes its homework but usually when Im just normally trying to sleep after a long day I cant, I go into a sort of half awake half asleep if I do, anyway, my best friend takes sleeping pills, so I discussed buying some for me with my mom but she refuses to get me any because she says every kind of pill or med hurts your body and that I don't need them, I really do need them though. So sometimes I use my friends sleeping pills, but the day before yesterday and yesterday I didn't have any and I was depressed and couldn't sleep and was getting ticked off so I found some cough medicine in my cabinet, codine, and it read CAUSES DROWNINESS, so I took 2 teaspoons, after awhile I fell alseep soundly, even though it gave me nightmares I fell asleep, but when I told my friend this she said that using cough med not intended on coughs was like using it for drugs and that it was bad, is she right? Should I contuine using cough med for sleeping aid or are there bad side effects? And Ive tried going to sleep earlier, reading before bed, drinking milk, counting sheep/cows, counting, a lot of things but I just can't sleep! Any advice on how to maybe to convince my mom in buying me some proper sleeping aid? Or something? Please, I really need my sleep, I have huge exams coming up, at the last 3 days of Jan. So Please, Thank you very much!

I understand why your mom doesn't want you to take sleeping pills or medication for your sleeping problem. They can be addictive and they have harmful side effects. I also, think that you should stop taking cough medicine too, as it is only a short term solution for your problem.

Have you tried changing your diet? Are you drinking or eating anything that has a lot of caffeine, such as : soda pop, junk food, chocolate, tea etc. If you aren't eating fresh fruits and vegetables you might want to add them to your diet. Also, drink plenty of water.

I believe that you should try yoga to help you with your sleep problem as it is very relaxing. I have been doing yoga and it really helps me sleep much better. It teaches you how to breathe and relax. For more information about yoga visit here: http://myhealthessentials.blogspot.c...ealth-and.html

Walking is also a good exercise and it too, can be very relaxing. There are many forms of exercises you can do. Find something that you think that you might like.

Lastly, but not least if you still feel that you want someone to help you out. Talk to your mom about seeing a naturopath. A naturopath treats the whole body and not just the symptom. They use natural and holistic methods.

    Wishing you good health!

Hi Jinxz, sorry you are having difficulty sleeping. Sleep is very important to busy people. If you have any Health Food Stores nearby, just take a peak inside. There are lot of natural remedies for sleep available that are not harmful. You should also read the postings on the side of the box though. It is a govt. regulation nowadays to post anything that may be harmful under certain medical conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure) thryroid disease etc. It doesn't mean you will inherit these conditions, but people with them should not take that particular sleep aid.

Good luck. I take Melatonin myself. You may want to look that one up on the internet.
