The best way to learn French is to go and live in a French speaking country.
The second best way is to start training with a private French teacher.
The third best way is to start reading French books.
The best way to WRITE French words is by writing them on a computer with French spell checker.

    Success !

I would think that would be very true about it being easier to speak it than write it. If you have to write it, then the issues of correct spellings and grammar come into play. Whereas, if you are speaking it, then you might be a little bit incorrect in your grammar, but people most likely would still be able to understand what you are saying.

I'm teachter. And I teach french, and history and geography.
I work with pupil beetween 10 to 16 years olds.
I see every day, how writing french is difficult.
Very much rules, (spell, grammar , used verb (conjugaison)) and, if you want write a good french, you must work hard, many years. Except, if you have, an amazing brain.

French words are various. You must record the spell about each word. There is not a rule for all the word. But, almost, one rule, one word.
    Example:
In English you say an horse, many horses.
In French you say: Un cheval , des chevaux.

In English: a jackal, many jackals (I suppose)
In frecnh un chacal, des chacals.

The rule is different with "cheval" and "chacal"

If you want, I can help you, sometime. [Personal email address removed for privacy.]

If you want to try! Write in french! I'll say my think.
    About american or english:
According to me it's very difficult to understand somebody speaking.
I can't guess what are the words spelled.
It's more easy to read a newspaper.
Do you know a solution, to understand, to heard, what americans say?

    Later.
