Would you take a job paying less if you hated where you were?
I have been employed at my current job for the past four months and although I like what I do (I'm in advertising) I don't like my boss or his wife. Yes his wife works in the same office and she is soooo unfriendly, both of them are. My desk is situated right across from hers and every 15 seconds or so she glances up and looks at me (my guess is to make sure I'm doing work), it drives me crazy. Then I have to visit clients on a regular basis which I love but my boss does not reimburse me for gas. He has once after I asked him several times. He hasn't since then and being the unapproachable person that he is I really don't like asking him. This is something that should be automatic, not what I have to beg for. I was working for the human resources department in government before this and foolishly left thinking the grass was greener on the other side, but its not! I tried to get back in but it wasn't happening until this morning when I was offered a similar position, but less money then I am making here. At this point it doesn't even matter that much because all I want is peace of mind. Not to mention the benefits of working for government.
So I ask, would you take a job that pays less if it meant you being happier?

    Yes...

For me I always wondered why people would spend 8 hours a day 5 days a week doing something they were unhappy with...

I have at times had to work crappy jobs for the money and hated it, needs must as they say...

If you can cover the cost of your bills and you think you would be happier,my advice is go for it!

    Yes, absolutely. I'd take it.

You spend 7-8 hours a day with the people that you work with and their attitude can really affect your well-being, as you're finding.

I'd go - you can always look for something else while you're in the new job.

They sound controlling, anal and miserable. Get out of there!

I have decided to accept the job at Gov't. When I had a meeting with them I was pleasantly surprised that they offered me more money than I am making now.
These past couple of days I have felt extremely guilty for leaving. My boss is impressed with my work and is speaking about moving progressively forward for 2010. I have not handed in my resignation letter yet because I just feel so bad. I didn't think it would be this hard to resign.

    Good for you.

I am in a job that pays less than if I worked in a bigger hospital, but I stay. Why? Because I am happy with the doctors I work with and I just love the other nurses I work with. At this point I would never even consider moving to a bigger hospital with better pay and better benefits. My family benefits as well because I am happy. ;)

Be totally professional about it... hand in the resignation, and if they ask why just say you have been offered a position that you feel will help you progress up the ladder,it's a big chance for you,you have 'enjoyed ' working for them, and thank them... leave it at that.

Congrats on the new job Good for you. I was at a job I hated with every fiber of my being. I had some F*&k you money in the bank so I just quit one day (hence the name of the money). No job lined up nothing. I value my mental health a lot more then any job. My current employer saw my resume online and called me and offered me a job with no interview. Best job I ever had so far.

First always get a new job before you quit the one.

But you are going to work 40 or more years, you should be doing something you enjoy.

I must be the biggest coward ever! I have not yet handed in my resignation. I was going to until my boss came to my desk with a huge smile on his face telling me how happy he is with the sales and advertising I've been doing. He also mentioned that commission is going to be big on top my yearly bonus. He wants me to spear head a big campaign in 2010 and already gave me the outline. After all of this I will look so horrible submitting my resignation letter. Please help me, all of the advice I've received so far has been good.

I have submitted my resume on Monday and it was much better then I thought. He avoided me that morning and when I returned from lunch he sent me an email that read "please see me after your lunch". He calls me in his office and asks, why? I told him it was a stressful situation. He looked at me in the eye and said, "you've accepted another job offer haven't you?" I smiled and said yes then he told me that he wishes me the best and isn't upset. As he said, its your decision to go where ever you please. The next day there was a Card on my desk from him and his wife wishing me a prosperous 2010. Their reaction is such a surprise to me, and I'm glad they are professional about it.
