I wouldn't call it defamation, but he either didn't have enough nerve to tell you why you were fired, or there was no other reason then downsizing. Either way, you should know. Unless you are calling it defamation because you actually know why you were fired.

You should definitely make an attempt to determine why you were fired.

If they won't tell you, then you'll probably have to hire a lawyer to find out the truth.

Why do you think you were fired?

Depending on where you are at, he does not have to tell you, in the US in what they call "right to work states" they can file you for any reason, or just no reason. I can go in tomorrow into work and fire every person with blonde hair, or every other person who happened to work though the back door.

They just can not file you for any protected class reason, race, religion ( ect)

So even with an attorney, they can merely say they were within their rights to fire you and it was for for any protected status.

So while you wish you knew, and I would suspect you must have some idea, you move on, file for unemployment and find something new

Now if they refuse your unemployment, then you appeal and they have to prove you were fired for some fault or violation of rules
