Can I still be pregnant after miscarriage?
Two weeks ago I had a miscarriage went in to do a D & C cause I wanted to start the healing process. Doctor said it would take 30-45 minutes but my husband said the doc was done in 15 minutes he said I pretty much was finished with the process. I've been trying to get a hold of my doc to see exactly what he did but he seems too busy and he just has his nurse's prescribe me meds to try this to help me. Five days after I was in the hospital I started feeling pregnant, sensitive to smells, tired, breast fullfillment and needing to keep something my stomach due to nausua. I've been searching the web since my doc won't get back to me and I found out that sometimes you miscarry one baby but carry the twin as a normal pregnancy. So is it possible that I'm still pregnant or could it be that my body hasn't realized that the pregnancy is over? I have a 6 year old boy, 1 year old girl & a 8 month old boy so in September when I found out I was pregnant I was shocked mostly cause I was on the pill and scared to death how I was handle 3 kids under the age of 2. Next week is my 30th birthday so I would to celbrate but I don't want to over celbrate if there's a chance of me being pregnant.

    Please help... THANKS...

First of all, I'm very sorry for your loss. I just had a D&C in July so I know how difficult it can be.

Its very unlikely that you are still pregnant with a fetus. Doctors will often put a D&C at 30 - 45 minutes to allow themselves time to complete it. The amount of tissue and how long it takes depends on how far along you were in the pregnancy. If you were still very early, you would not have had much tissue for him to remove.

After a D&C its very common to have some "retained products of conception" (tissue) that is still inside your body. That will keep your HCG levels above 5 and possibly give you pregnancy symptoms. Personally, it took 78 days before my HCG's got to 7 and I bled the entire time until then. A D&C is fairly traumatic and could be fooling your body to thinking its still in early pregnancy, or possibly about to start an actual period.

Have you scheduled your 2 week follow up? This is routine, so make sure you have it done. When you go, explain your concerns and ask for a follow up blood test to check your HCG levels.

I was 11 weeks pg when I started the miscarry on Thursday they sent me home for the weekend then did the D & C Monday evening. Everyone always thought I was having twins cause at 6 weeks I had a belly & I know you show earlier w/each pregnancy but everyone thought it was still early and I swear I still feel movement. My husband says it's cause I want to be pregnant still, since I already have my hands full w/little ones not really but I would like it TONS if I knew my little Lily was okay. That's what we were going to name her.

After the D & C he said to make a fallow-up apt in a month so its set for Oct. 27th. Hopefully everything is okay, my husband threw me a surprise birthday party on Saturday and after drinking one mixed drink I started crampin really bad.

Thanks for the advice my ex-sister-in-law said not to waste my money on a pg test cause of my HCG levels are probably still out of whack. I had a little spotting last week, just when I wiped though, so I thought I was going to have my period but it hasn't came yet. But I don't miss it :) or worried cause I usually don't start it till this coming weekend or the fallowing, I think, I haven't had a normal period since Feb. 2006 before I started having my little ones.

    Thanks..

Sorry for your lost, I have never had a d & c although I did miscarry last year , my dr told me to do a test as soon as bleeding started I got a negative result within an hour so my levels were totally back to normal, I am now pregnant again 7mths it did start as twins and my hcg levels were through the roof in early stages however again I lost one but never had a bleeding they called it a failling twin, I think it would be very unlikely for you to still be pregnant however I know how we end up longing to still be and after having kids already it never makes sense why it happens, goodluck and I hope this helps somewhat

Thanks for everyone's kind thoughts during my loss. My husband threw me a surprise birthday party on the 18th but after one drink I started craming really bad but I had a blast with all my friends and huby. Emotionally I'm doing a thousand times better. Being intimate w/my huby hurts now days so hopefully my doc can fill me in a little tomorrow about this. I was thinking of taking a test just to see what is says since I still haven't had my period, I'm still peeing all the time and now I'm to the point I can't eat too much cause I get sick. After the D & C I only bleed 4-5 days. I never went to a doctor apt for my pregnancy so I had no idea what my HCG levels were, I wish I went as soon as I found out I was now. Hopefully doc can clear everything up for me.

Well my visit to the doc was unhelpful. They took a urine pg test @ 1:00 and that came back negative but then he said if we took a blood test it would come back positive. When he was feeling my belly he was like is it uncomfortable when I push here on your stomach and I was like "yes" He thinks my nausau and peeing a lot might have to do with a bladder infection, I should find out today if I do or not. I really wanted answers when I went but I think I'm more confused now then I was. I figured if he thought I was having some kind of infection he would did a ultra sound or something to make sure he got everything when he did the D & C but him and the nurse seemed more concerned that I was brave being at there office shortly after I my experience. Which pissed me off cause I'm coping with it, the last thing I need is the doc & nurse rubbing it in my face...
I'm still having cramps & my little baby belly so I might go to a different doctor and see what they say and see if they can put all my questions to rest...

I agree that you should have been given an ultrasound to look for retained tissue instead of a simple external exam.

A urine test is not as sensitive as a blood test, so that's why one would show + while another would not. The goal is to see your HCG levels go down to between 5 and 0 to be considered over the miscarriage. Even if it's a "10" you wouldn't really be pregnant, but you'd get a positive blood test.

Take care - if he doesn't do more to answer your questions, consider a second opinion. :)

It worries me a lot that there's something he pushed on that made me uncomfortable and him not do more than a urine test. So I'll defetly be getting a second opionion since my test came back negative for bladder infection.

How do they check HCG levels? With all my pregnancy's I don't believe I've ever been told what my levels are...

I am having the same problem you are. Although I have not had a D & C (wat is that by the way?) I had a miscarriage last Saturday (August 14th) and am still bleeding. Some days it is heavy like I'm still miscarrying and others it is like I am coming off my period. I still feel the twinges, am REALLY tired, go to the bathroom a lot, and feel sick 2 my stomach. I have not had my HCG levels checked yet but I am in the same boat as you are with knowing the levels. I have a 2 1/2 year old and a 1 year old (next month) and have never known my HCG levels.

I too had a misscarriage last month, followed by a D & C. 2 weeks after my HCG levels were still at 80 but by the 3rd week afterwards are now down to 22. It's true, that any material remaining (even after a D & C because they never scrape away too much or it will possibly interfere with you becoming pregnant again) can keep your HCG levels still raised. Which this then tricks you into thinking that there still in fact another fetus inside of you. But the fact is, if they did the D & C, the only fetus that could remain, (if undetected in the ultrasound) is an ectopic or tubal pregnancy... and therefore, it would not be viable anyway. I've had to cope with this as my levels have not gone to zero yet, but it's par for the course. Thought I'd share if it helps anyone.

You can miscarry one twin and keep the other, however I believe the D&C would not allow the other twin to survive in the womb. I think that the symptoms you are feeling are from the hormones of being pregnant. I am sorry for your loss.

I miscarried naturally at 5 weeks ( Jan 25, 2012)... bled for 2 weeks but still feel very pregnant to this day (March 1st, 2012). I went to the doctor at 5 weeks because I was bleeding and cramping horribly! However, during an ultra- sound they weren't able to see anything. They did ultra sound twice to make sure. I am not sure when to even expect my period. I went to the doctor again last week to confirm my negative pregnancy test. When I asked my doctor when I can expect my cycle he responded with an " I don't know". Ladies, when does your cycle come back? I had very mild spotting for maybe 1 hr but that's it. Could I still be pregnant?

Those symptoms remind me of what my wife had - an ectopic pregnancy. Good to check HCG levels at an interval.

I had a D&C less than a week ago and according to the Nurse Practitioner the pregnancy test is still showing positive, but she says its normal. I don't know but my breasts are still sensative and I still feel nauseous.

I started bleeding when I was 7 weeks. I went to the ER, they did an ultrasound and told me that everything looked great and the baby had a strong heart beat. This was On Monday. They asked me to follow up with my OB, later that week. I saw her on Wednesday. The baby still had a strong heart beat, in spite of the bleeding. Thursday night I passed some clots. I went in to the OB 's office Friday morning. Sonogram technician, who was really young & definitely not experienced told me she could not see the baby, so the Dr. told me I must have miscarried. They said they will test the clots I brought in & did some blood tests.
I bled until Sunday. I went for my follow up appointment on Wednesday. The only thing my OB said was your progesterone levels were high, so it must have been a bad conception. No mention of what my HCG levels were in last blood test or what the tissue result showed. I was very upset and forgot to bring those up. Later that day I called the office back and asked the questions. There answer was "Looks like it was a product of conception." I asked for all my lab results to be faxed to me, it has been 2 weeks. I still have not gotten them.
Meanwhile, my breast are still tender, I am still nauseous and still peeing a lot. My husband says I might be making myself feel the symptoms because I don't want to let go. Now I am just praying to God to make my period return soon if I am not pregnant or make it clear that I am still pregnant. I just don't know what to do.
