As I don't seem to have missed anything obvious, I think I'll take the laptop back to the shop (PC World) and ask them why it doesn't work wirelessly (that is without the adaptor)....

The system just doesn't pick up the wireless - wireless network not found is usually the message. It also advises to check that the wireless switch is on!
