Sound Went out Today on Windows XP
I have a Gateway GT4016 with Windows XP. No major issues. The sound went out today.
There are no conflicts under the device manager tab for the item, and the speakers are hooked up and have power. What else could be the problem?

Have you checked the simple stuff?
    • Cable unplugged from speakers or sound card.
    • Volume control panel overall mute is on/specific output muted.

Try headphones or other speakers to isolate problem to computer or speakers.

Speakers are hooked up and have power, of course I already told you that but...

    Nothing is muted...

No recent software or driver changes...

Still no alerts under device manager tab...

I'm hoping to avoid reinstalling XP

The Realtek Audio HD Manager also tells you when a jack has been plugged in. There's an option to test the 2CH speaker, but I still get no sound.

Again, either the computer's audio output or the speakers need to be independently verified to determine which isn't working. If you have a CD drive, plug the speakers into the headset jack and stick in an audio CD. Also reboot the computer.

Reinstalling XP would be an over-reaction at this stage.

Booted PC and sound works again, however it's on the quiet side. It may have been a fluke. The sound card is integrated onto the motherboard. I hope audio jacks are not becoming loose.

Did any software, such as a game, crash before the sound went out? Sometimes that will corrupt the driver/hardware state.
