It's the repository for your System Restore data. That's why most anti-virus makers tell you to disable System Restore before doing a full scan (of course you lose your restore points then). Here is Symantec's info on that:

System Volume information contains all of your system restore points.
If you have a virus stuck in them the easiest way to remove it is to turn system restore off, deleting all restore points and then turning it back on.

Right click 'my computer' > properties > system restore tab > check the box > click Apply > click OK on the error message > wait a bit > uncheck the box > apply and OK.

    Job done

    System Virus
    Hi, thyag,
My suggestion does not deal with "viruses", so to speak, but with Spyware.
These Trojans might possibly find their way into the same folder, but not sure.
One good free program is Spyware Blaster, available from:
    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbupdate.html
It has "definitions" available for downloading, about every 3 weeks or so.
It stops stuff from getting into the computer in the first place.
Another good one suggested by others is the Microsoft Anti-spyware program.
    Best of luck.

I'm just curious, this was advice you gave someone else in a different thread. So I'm not sure I understand your post here. The OP asked about a message he was getting for his virus scans. The question was answered and the solution acknowledged by the OP. Nowhere was anything indicated about spyware or even that the OP wasn't using some some anti-spyware utility. It seems to me that you are not following your own advice here.
