How do you type beta hat in word?

I'm not sure what "beta hat" is. Is it some character not normally used in US English?

What version of Word and which version of Windows are you using? Since Word 97 meets my needs it is the newest I have (as part of Office 97).

Check the shortcuts on your "Start" menu for the "Character Map" application. It might be under "All Programs | Accessories | System Tools" depending on your Windows version. Selecting a font in the drop down at the top of the "Character Map" displays the available characters in the center of the window. Click a character to select it. You have the option of clicking a "copy" button to copy the character to the Windows clip board. The versions of "Character Map" I have seen also list a character number in the text box at the bottom of the window. In many application you are able to add the character by typing that number on the numeric key pad (NOT the numbers at the top of the main keyboard field) while holding one of the keyboard's ALT keys. For the ALT key sequence to be effective you must have a font containing that character selected in your application. For Example, type ALT+0169 (make sure to include the zero) for the copyright symbol © with the Arial font selected

In Word 97 there is a "Symbol..." pop-up very similar to the Character Map application available on the "Insert" menu. If your version doesn't have quite the same features look for "Typing,Navigating and Selecting | Typing | Insert symbols or special characters" or something similar on the "Contents" tab of the "Help Topics". Unfortunately the Word 97 "Symbol..." pop-up doesn't show the keypad sequence to type while holding down the ALT key.
