How do I install a genuine copy of Windows XP w/out wiping out entire computer?
I purchased a computer from a thrift store and it has a counterfeit version of windows. I have a validation warning and can't do any updates. I finally have an authentic version of XP but my computer won't run the disc. The computer recognizes that there is a CD in the drive but then nothing. I click Run and then nothing happens. I have recently utilized the CD drive for another program, and it works fine. Someone told me I could do a repair to install the missing components, but how can I get to that point if it won't run the CD? What can I do to fix this w/out wiping my system clean?

Try booting to the CD instead of running it after booting.

Please don't start a new thread with a follow-up. Use the Answer options below. I've merged your threads for you.

Place the CD in the drive then power off and back on. If the machine doesn't boot to the CD you may have to enter the Setup to set it to boot from CD.

Sorry about my blunder, I'm new to this type of communication, thanks for your patience. When I restart my computer a Windows box appears and it is asking me to {Resolve Now} or {Resolve Later} to protect my copy of Windows, do you think I should click the Resolve Now and try to install it from there? If not then, how do I enter the Setup?

Entering setup varies from PC to PC. What kind of PC do you have?

As far as your error goes that is because your software is recognized as pirated. Is the genuine copy the same version as the pirated version?

If they are I believe there is a registry hack that allows you to revalidate windows with a genuine key.
