When you lose weigth you generally lose it from all over your body, however there are exercises that can focus on particular parts of the body.
Speaking to a gym instructor or researching fitness dvd's will give you a broader view of what's available to target your problem area.

Spot weight loss is not possible. Those abs machines you see on TV do not provide you with 6 or 8 packs. I agree with redhed 35 in that weight loss occurs fairly uniformly. Some physiologists claim that last fat on-first to go is the way it works. If you want to lose abdominal weight, working on your "core" (muscles surrounding your mid and abdominal sections)will help to define those muscles and can contribute to overall weight loss but just exercising one part of your body in the hope that you will lose fat in that area does not work. Better to have an overall fitness program including cardio and resistance and if you stick to it and don't have poor dietary habits-no question-you'll lose weight-all over!

I agree with the above.
I also think that the first place one should focus is the core... not because you want spot reduction, but because when starting a new lifestyle, your core is at the heart of all you will accomplish.
So... no... don't expect to focus on your abs and to see spot reduction that gives your swimsuit definition.
But do focus on your abs and your back and your core to get you primed to get where you want to be.
The mantra you should be chanting is to confuse your body... do this long enough and you will see both the site specific results you want and an overall increase in health that you'll love.

You can't do that unless you get lipo. But you can tone certain areas more than others to create illusions. You also could go to hourglassangel.com and order a compression garment which can can help with the midsection. My doctor recommended this to me. Fat can be molded but you can't control where you lose the weight.
