Is it appropriate for the mother of the groom to wear a dressy, tailored pant set for an afternoon wedding?

I wouldn't wear a pant suit (as mother of the groom) no matter how dressy. And I consider myself quite savvy re fashion.

I think a pant suit can be okay, but it would have to be somewhat flashier than a plain tailored suit (flowy jacket, beading detail, etc.).
I would never dare tell my mother-in-law what to wear, but she did ask me if a tea length skirt was okay. Once I said it would be fine, she found what she wanted and was happy to wear it. She asked because she was unsure how formal our wedding would be and thought she might need a full-length skirt.
That's why its best if you ask your future daughter-in-law. She's the only one with a clear vision of the wedding. Even if its in the afternoon, it could be quite formal, and a pantsuit wouldn't necessarily be appropriate. She CAN'T tell you what to wear, but it might help you to talk with her and gauge how formal this event will be.

Having been a professional wedding photographer for over 30 years I have never seen a mother of the groom wear a pant suite no matter what time the wedding is. Please , have some some self pride and some respect for the occasion.

Some people aren't comfortable in skirts, regardless the occasion.
I believe that if the pants suit fit in with the rest of the style of the wedding, it would be just fine. I've seen some very dressy pants suits, with loose chiffony legs and a dressy (with beads) jacket. I was actually tempted to wear something like this to my OWN wedding--it's dressy, formal, and pretty without being a skirt.
But... as others have said... there should be a discussion between the mother of the groom and the bride (I'm not sure which you are in this case) to determine what works for both parties. In the end, though, the mother of the groom should concede to the bride's vision of the wedding. Compromise is good, but it is HER day, and the apparel should reflect HER idea of the wedding.

I think that it is OK if you choose one that is very elegant, suits you perfectly and is well made and fitted for you. It is unusual to do though, so I would ask a close friend or relative who has impeccable taste to come and see the outfit before you buy it. If it's very fitted, you may look more like the catering manager than a member of the groom's family - think elegant, beaded, silk - something that says "special" and "social" rather than business occasion. I have a pair of palazzo pants that are chiffon and wear them with a silk camisole and beaded jacket - the outfit is fancy enough for a black tie function. It's all in the style.
